Summer Cooking Classes at the Brown Hotel

by Robin Garr » Tue Jun 08, 2010 9:53 am

The Brown Hotel plans three summer dates for 2010 Cooking Class Demonstrations.

7 p.m., Friday, June 25 – Reflecting local market fresh produce and light fare

7 p.m., Friday, July 30 – Creating a Southern picnic to enjoy with family and friends

7 p.m., Friday, Aug. 20 – Featuring Eastern American coastal seafood

Executive Chef Laurent Géroli will present cooking demonstrations at the chef’s table, creating five dishes with wine served during the presentation. The cost is $79 plus tax and gratuity. Seating is limited. Call Neal Ward for reservations, 736-2996.

Cooking class guests may stay the night at the Brown with a special Culinary Getaway Package. This package is for two people and provides the Cooking Class Demonstration, an overnight stay in a deluxe king room with valet parking, and breakfast on Saturday morning in the J. Graham Café. The cost starts at $399 plus tax. Packages are sold on a first-come, first-served basis due to the limited seating availability at the chef’s table.

How does one pronounce the chef's last name? I don't know even if it s "hard" G or a "soft" j sound. I've seen it in print many times, but not sure I've ever heard it.

My command of French is pretty oafish and mostly centered on food and wine, but by analogy to other French "Ge-" names like Georges and Gérald, I'd take a stab at ...

thanks. That sounds like a logical approach! I took reading French in college, so my pronunciation is oafish as well.

When he was on the Secrets of Louisville Chefs, Kevin Harned tried to introduce him about five times, always wrong pronunciation. Of course that did not make it into the show. Finally gave up and introduced him as the "chef at the Brown Hotel". Dean came pretty close after the chef pronounced it for him.

The chef responded with good humor about it. Seemed like a nice guy.
