La Colombiana in Lyndon

by David Smith » Thu May 27, 2010 10:22 pm

Greetings,

There is a Colombian restaurant coming to Louisville. It will be in the same plaza as Liquor World, near Lyndon Lane and La Grange Rd. The sign is up, La Colombiana.

I don't know what will be on the menu, but look for Bandeja paisa, empanadas, tamales, arepas, and more...

They should be opening the second week of June.

I'm posting this as their friends. I'm a long time fan / lurker of this website, and thought I'd give all you fine foodies a head up.

Thank you,
David

Thanks, David ... actually, the forum has begun a conversation about this under another topic:

Glad to have your knowledgeable input! You might want to click to that other topic and post there as well.

Welcome David! We always like to have new faces join the fold.

And thanks for the tip. I don't get out that way that much anymore.

The wife I and I stopped by for a quick dinner tonight and were 100% satisfied. The place is ran by a mother and daughter team, with mom in the back and daughter running the front. They are still waiting on the beer license, so it was water and Manzana Postobón (apple soda) to drink. We took the recommendations of the server and ordered the empanadas, plantanos con queso y bocadillo, and carne desmechada arepa. We were given the background of every dish and as much Columbian history as we wanted. Before our food arrived, we were treated to chips with 2 types of salsa, a semi-spicy tomato salsa and a super smoky, hot, pepper salsa. The hot pepper salsa is a must. All the food was pretty good, nothing mind-blowing fantastic, but good. I had never had Columbia food before, so I have nothing to compare it to. It very well could have been fantastic food as Columbian food goes. We will defiantly be back, especially to try the bandeja paisa.

Side note: I stopped by My Patria after dinner to pick up some limes and there are some hard feelings brewing towards La Colombiana, maybe a turf war in the making.

Thanks for sharing Justin.

They opened on Sunday, and I haven't had the chance to stop by yet.

I'm looking forward for the Bandeja Paisa, though, having it with an ice cold cerveza is a must.

Justin, looking at your signature, I'm sure you would like the chicharrón.

Four of us tried La Colombiana for lunch yesterday. Two of us tried the Sudado de carne y papa and two had Arepas rellenas. All of us thoroughly enjoyed our choices. As Justin stated, things are still coming together as they have only been open a couple of days. Our waitress was very helpful explaining what each item was and making suggestions of things to try. People around us all seemed to be enjoying their meals. We look forward to our next visit.

Stopped in for lunch yesterday, Anthony Lamas had beat us in :) He had a big bowl of what I'm assuming was one of the soups. We had the fried yucca, very yummy, and the arepas rellanas...I got the Hawaiana, while the menu promised beans and lettuce and sour cream we got none of that, but the arepas were tasty without. The servers were very nice, but it's obvious this is a new venture and they are still getting up and running. Justin was correct, the hot salsa was very good. We each tried Bebidas and those were very different and very good too, sweet but not so much that you felt like you were drinking dessert. Made the trek over to Mi Patria to browse afterward, surely they must realize this restaurant is going to increase their foot traffic? No turf war needed, they are two very different places...

Stopped in for lunch today and had a fantastic experience. We all ordered off the lunch menu and our food was literally ready in less than 5 minutes. Two of us ordered pork in green sauce which was served with red beans and white rice. The red beans were tasty and reminded me of what Havana Rumba does with black beans. The pork melted in my mouth and the green sauce was slightly spicy, and just thick enough to have a stew like consistency. They actually refer to it as a stew, but it is not a dish that I would eat out of a bowl with a spoon. Better to shovel the pork and sauce on to a tortilla. The other member of our party had a bone in chicken dish that had apparently been slow cooked in a red sauce. It was visibly falling off the bone and he also gave it high marks. Lunch prices were extremely reasonable and we will definitely add this to our list of preferred lunch spots in the area.

Seems like lunch is the theme here. The wife and stopped in today. Only "problem" that posters have voiced before, it was not busy at all. When we walked in there was one person finishing up his lunch. After he left we were the only ones there until just as we left, one customer came in. That, as much as the great lunch, is why I am posting. After eating here, we do not want to see this one go away.

I picked the Sudado de Puerco Enchilado Verde, yea, I have the menu in front of me, which is the pork stew that I believe Robin reviewed. Susan had the beef arepa. Both were excellent. Oh, and we started with a beef and a chicken empanadas. Boy, a tough decision, but Havana Rumba's empanadas win out. Still good here though, and way too much food, but we wanted to try several different items.

When talking to the sever she did say that the Sudado de Puerco Enchilado Verne that I had was actually a Mexican dish, not Colombian. (She stated that they get a lot of Mexican customers.) She explained the entire menu to us, pointing out the Colombian dishes for next time. That's the best part, since I did not get a traditional Colombian dish, we will have to go back.

Give La Colombiana a try, even if it's just for lunch.
