I'm 30, she's paying! Help?

by JustinHammond » Thu May 27, 2010 8:13 pm

My 30th birthday is tomorrow and the wife is taking me anywhere I choose. I am more in mood for forward-thinking cocktails vs. awesome food. I'm thinking Z's, Social, or The Pig, but I need suggestions. The Blind Pigs cocktail menu looks awesome, but the food doesn't look exciting and I frequent Z's and Social. Help?

Gracias, Bill. I guess? Drink like I'm 15, wake up like I'm 80.

Why not split the evening: drinks at Blind Pig and dinner at Social? That way, you'll get the best of both drinks and food.

Allow me to amend... I'm not saying that the Blind Pig has bad food. Just that you'll get what you are looking for by going to both restaurants.

Happy birthday, Justin!

Personally, I'm a fan of the Pig, and have enjoyed a number of their dishes. Of course the bill of fare is "meaty," this being their Butchertown/Pig shtick, but it's interesting stuff. Still, as others have said, why not make it a progressive dinner? Start at the Pig, enjoy cocktails, and see how you feel about the menu when you're there, enjoying the environment and watching 'em at work in the open kitchen. If you still want to move on down the road, you've got lots of nearby options - in addition to Social, Mayan Cafe and Wiltshire on Market are also nearby, and all three ought to meet your "interesting food" criterion.

Obviously the opinion of someone who hasn't yet experienced 50.

Happy Birthday Justin...If it were me, I'd go for Z's Oyster Bar and Steakhouse...as opposed to "Fusion". Enjoy the cocktails.

Might I suggest having drinks and appitizers at two or three places?
I'd start at the Pig or maybe L&N or Varenese.
From any of those you could head to any of the others I mentioned or anywhere on the NULU strip or Frankfort Ave. 8)

Clearly, Im biased, but I would give our food a shot. I think it's pretty exciting, house cured/smoked/ground/stuffed meats are awesome, and it's not like we ignore veg, our ratatouille is rad as is the white bean dip. Everything else you mentioned is also fantastic, but I say try something new, besides, I don't know the impression you have of our food, but it's phenomenal. Joe is bad ass ;)

Looks like we are starting at The Pig.

Happy Birthday Justin! Whatever and wherever you decide to go I hope it's a grand celebration. I'm with the rest of the crowd... hit several places and pace yourself! Have fun!

I echo starting at the Pig. Try to get a seat at the bar (otherwise you'll wait an hour for a table), have cocktails, share an appetizer (I would suggest the Oyster Fritters in Champagne Butter (served with lemon aioli and red wine vinaigrette) and a sandwich (I would suggest, no, demand that you go with the Ivory Bacon (house made boudin blanc sausage, bacon, munster cheese, and aioli). Then move on towards East Market for something else.

If you haven't been to the Pig, I would give it a shot. It's on my short list for my 29th birthday in a few weeks.
