Beargrass Christian Church Market

by Amy Smalley » Sat Jul 07, 2007 10:27 pm

Today I had the pleasure of stopping by the new farmer's market at Beargrass Christian Church in St. Matthews. I was blown away! It was phenomenal. It's hard to believe it started only 3 weekends ago. There were many diverse vendors, the produce looked good. I can attest to the tomatoes and fresh lettuce I bought for BLTs for lunch today. There were also baked goods, cut flowers, plants, goat cheese, beef, lotions, painted gourds, and ice cream sundae booth, etc., etc. I personally liked it better that the Bardstown Rd. Market because the parking is easier and it seemed to have more vendors. The live music was a nice touch. I will be going back week after week with my family. A great find!

Is it held every Saturday or how frequently?

It is every Saturday through the summer. I would assume it also continues through the fall, but I don't know that for sure.

It is quite amazing that it only started 3 weeks ago. It seems that there were several more vendors than when I went

The turtle soup feast is at Bethel United Church of Christ, which is not too bad a state of confusion. It's at Shelbyville Road and St. Matthews Avenue, a few blocks west of where the old Sears used to be. The farmers market is at Beargrass Christian Church, on Shelbyville Road and Browns Lane, pretty much right across from where the old Sears used to be. :)

I agree... It seems that it has grown significantly, both in number of vendors and in number of customers, since I first went in June. I've tried beef, bison, eggs, cheese as well as produce, and have been very satisfied. I personally recommend the bourbon chocolate goat cheese from Capriole. It tastes like it came straight from heaven; it's like a cheese course and a dessert course all in one. Anyway, I will definitely be back every week until Fall.

Meridian Cafe will be in attendance every Saturday until fall.

Come by and say hi, and forumites will get a discount on breakfast!!

Look forward to seeing you there.

btw, are at least four more vendors that are supposed to come in!

It is the hope of the managers to fill the lot!

Seating?

by Eliza W » Thu Jul 12, 2007 1:31 pm

I love the market. In addition to fresh produce, we've bought honey, pork, flowers, cheese, and Sunergos coffee. There was also a sign for fresh eggs, but we had a carton at home. We'll be trying them out this Saturday.

Two weeks ago, when we were there, Meridian Cafe was making breakfast wraps with a nice looking fruit salad (including flowers - a nice detail). The problem was that there was no place to sit. People on their own might be able to eat while walking around, but I was with my children (as were a large portion of the other shoppers). It's almost impossible to eat while walking with a child, especially if those children are eating as well. You might be able to sit on the steps, but this is apparently the access route to the bathrooms.

I know another poster mentioned this, but wouldn't it be possible to put up a picnic table or two? It would help the people selling food and pastries, shoppers who want to eat, and those who can't walk for extended periods.

tables at farmers market

by Heather Y » Thu Jul 12, 2007 6:30 pm

Thanks for you input Eliza.
You are right, there has been other mention of "someplace to sit" while eating.

We asked the church if they would be interested in pulling out a couple of tables and chairs for the folks who visit the market to sit, and listen to the band, and eat and drink whatever vendors are selling, but they are volunteers that are not willing to get in too deep because they will not stay with the market once in gets up and running. Eventually they will hire a market manager who will oversee the weekly tasks of the market.
(from what I am told it will also eventually become self driven as time goes by)

It would be more than likely, our (Meridian) responsibility to provide tables and chairs so folks can sit and eat, because we are one of the vendor of foods that require plate and fork, which is hard to juggle while shopping.

Due to space and hauling issues, we are somewhat limited to the size and capacity of seating that we could provide. I am working on it though.
I feel that something will be better than nothing.
There are other food vendors at the market, that means that each of us will have to supply seating.

As far as picnic tables go... I do not have the ability to provide picnic tables at the farmers market. We do have five over at Meridian, but none that are portable.

If you are at the market, stop the guys in the "yellow" vests and please give your suggestion to them. The more they hear it, the more that they maybe will be persuaded to change their mind. In the meantime, I am working on something!

Thanks!
Heather
