Jack's/Equus

by Catherine Davidson » Sun May 16, 2010 12:04 pm

After an hour of indecision over whether to head for an excellent fried chicken house or an excellent burger palace we turned up at Jack's and ordered both. Wonderful meal. Why? Service was great, so great I actually made a point of tipping a little more than 20%. (Huge for me :D ) The chicken arrived warm and juicy with a big flavor. The kale was zippy. The cornbread was fun! The burger was awesome, the fries were fresh , and the onion rings were fat and tasted homemade. We arrived at 9 but several tables were seated after us which to me is always a good sign. The new room is informal clubby if that's a style. Patrons were in suits to" better" shorts and shirts w/collars. And the atmosphere was relaxed. But most importantly, I congratulate Jack's on delivering stellar basics across the board. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think most people still recognize outstanding service whether it's delivered in black tie or not. I also think most still value fresh, piping hot, juicy, etc. food on their plate whether it's fried chicken or a multi-flavored, architectural course with sophisticated dynamics at a much higher price point. We pay a lot of attention to the unusual, the newest, the colorful but also crave the basics well executed. But sometimes that can be hard to find. Even here. Last night exceeded my expectations. I can't wait to go back! CD

The service is always great there - Jonathan, Joy, Cary and Ryan are fantastic. I don't want to leave anyone out - I've just know this group all the years I've been going there - hey, I don't even have to order my drink anymore!

Which is also wonderful. They probably know you by name. Which brings to mind, in which restaurant (s) are you known by name?

I love Jack's/Equus!

I'm not sure about knowing us by name, but the people at VK probably know my husband and I on sight, now. We're in there once a week.

Well come to think of it, if I don't count owners of restaurants I know personally, I'm not sure I'm known by name anywhere though I might be in the same establishment more than once a week. Maybe that's a cultural thing gone by the wayside: service staff remembering your name and greeting you with it.
