May is National BBQ Month - Lets Celebrate

by Steve P » Thu May 13, 2010 11:23 am

May is National BBQ Month !!!

So the other day I was pondering why I love BBQ so much and well...In some roundabout kinda way these links somehow seemed to explain it.

Anyway, it's "load out" day for The Rolling Bones (check us out on Facebook)...This weekend we're taking the show in the road to Sevierville TN for their "Bloomin' Barbecue and Bluegrass" festival. By the time the weekend is over we'll have blown through 50 pounds of charcoal, 6 or 8 racks of ribs, 15 pounds of pork shoulder, 15 pounds of beef briskets, 6 pounds of chicken pieces/parts, 6 Macanudo Maduro cigars and God knows how much Bud Light. It's a lovely thing.

Did my part to support the cause this weekend...BTW, the Brisket scored 163 out of a possible 180 and was still only good for 27th out of 54 places. TOUGH competition.

Carla,

The Owensboro BBQ Festival (which I think is what you're referring to) was held May 7th and 8th. The Owensboro KCBS contest ("Grillin' and Chillin") will be held Sept 24th and 25th. As of now, that one is not on our schedule...We might cook it but it depends on how many more butt kickings I can take.

The next stop on our "Drinking in the Driveway" tour is Jeffersonville IN on June 18th and 19th, with special guest Dan Thomas holding down assistant pit master duties.

Megan,

I wish the judges would have felt the same way :? It was a tough-tough competition. To put things into perspective an overall score of 588 placed us in the middle of the pack at a previous contest. This week we scored a 614 overall...and it was only good for a lowly 48th out of 54 teams. The "big gunners" were out in force this weekend...if you've seen 'em on TV, they were there...and it's pretty difficult for "weekenders" like us (who do this for fun) to compete against folks who do it for a living.

It WAS some good eatin' BBQ however :D

Hey Steve - I don't know jack about BBQ and rarely eat it - most of my samples are from picnics and friends' plates when ordering out (I'll always order something healthier). That said, my dad's ribs are the tastiest I've ever had. 1.) because he uses an awesome sauce hand made and jarred by a friend; and 2.) he pressure cooks them before putting them on the grill. My whole family stands behind this as a transcendent way to prepare them.

What are your thoughts? Are we all naive BBQ dodos?

PS - your pictures look awesome! Sounds like such a fun time - I wanna see some pics of authentic hillbillies!

Jackie,

BBQ is as BBQ does. Far be it from me to assume the role of anything other than a BBQ aficionado. Based on my recent scores on the circuit, expert I am not. The method you describe is called the "Chicago Style" (not allowed on the competition circuit). I believe it gets it's name because it is a common technique in Chicago/Upper Midwest restaurants. Not true "low and slow" BBQ but it gets the job done and what the heck, for several million people this is THE way to do ribs.

Yay! So I'm not a screwball judge! Millions of others agree is good enough for mee.

Can't help but sing song:
*let-it go, let your-self go, low-&-slow, that is the tem-po*

Thanks for the feedbag, I mean feedback. :-)
