Taste of Asia

by Pam G » Sun May 09, 2010 7:58 pm

My son took me out for dinner tonight and after trying to get in at a couple of place around home, we ended up at Taste of Asia. It is located at Hurstbourne and Westport Road, the same strip center that Turkey Joes was located. This is definitely not a Chinese restaurant. The owner said it is a combination of Thai, Vietnamese & Chinese. Their entrees are limited to a choice for chicken, beef, shrimp or salmon and either steamed or fried rice or lo mein noodles and then a choice of teriyaki, bourbon, peanut or sweet chili basil sauce. I tried the chicken with lo mein and sweet chili basil sauce. I really liked the entree. We also had the chicken lettuce wraps. Chilled chicken with sweet peppers on bibb lettuce. My son had the miso soup. They also have Pho beef soup and Tom Khan gai soup. They offer about 10 different sushi. Also salads, desserts, appetizers.

And the best part was the bubble drinks. They have 10 fruity flavors. I had the Taro and it was wonderful! Son had the watermelon bubble drink.

They opened 2 weeks ago. I hope that if you are in the area, that you give them a try. I know I will be back.

I could wait no more, the lure of the Pho...and as Pam said this isn't a cookie cutter Chinese restaurant. I stopped in today for lunch to go, and ended up with enough food to eat for a week! Really generous portions, reasonable prices too. The owner is Eric Tran, he and his wife are from the west coast and wanted to offer a melange of Thai, Vietnamese, Phillipine and Chinese food. You assemble your entrees from a choice of meat/starch/sauce. I got Bourbon Beef Lo Mein, Teriyaki Chicken Lo Mein and Beef Pho. Next time I'll get the Peanut and Sweet Basil Chili.

The Pho first...very tasty, slightly different from others I've tried (Eric said no MSG) but very good, I could really taste the star anise, the broth was bright and fresh tasting. Wide flat noodles, crispy bean sprouts to add with the other usual condiments, it is easily a portion for 2, for $6.99.

The Beef Bourbon Lo Mein was full of beef and crispy veggies. I didn't discern a distinct bourbon flavor in the sauce, but it was sweet and good. I shot a little sriracha sauce on it and it went from good to really good.

The Chicken Teriyaki Lo Mein had wonderful grill marked pineapple slices on top and was my favorite so far. Again, a little sriracha and I was happy happy. Nice crunchy veggies. Toothsome noodles. Good stuff.

I couldn't resist a Bubble Drink, a smoothie sort of concoction, I got the passion fruit and it was soooo good. It is a mystery to me how I can suck mushy tapioca balls into the back of my mouth without wretching but I love those little chewy goobers.

The restaurant itself is neat and contemporary, soft cushy chairs to wait in while your order is being prepared. Eric was very helpful in explaining the menu. I am eager to try the Spring Rolls, the Chicken Satay and the Sushi. No menu online, I'm going to try and scan it tomorrow. His take away menu offers 50% off Bubble drinks on Thursday from 2 - 4 and kids 12 and under eat free on Mondays. Also he offers 50% off on sushi during his last hour open each day...Its easy to whiz by as you try and make the light at Hurstbourne and Westport, but it's worth a stop.

Ok....this sounds good. We will stop in this week.

BTW did Boombozz give up on the burger concept that was supposed to go in the old Hurstbourne/Westport location? A sign says for lease.

They are open until 9 so I guess the sushi special starts at 8. Although I called today and he said it was $2 off per roll and not half. We'll have to try that out. Seems like a good deal for some evening sushi!

My husband and I went to lunch at Taste of Asia today and we were both very disappointed with our meals. We both had shrimp with lo mein and while I had the sweet basil sauce he chose the peanut sauce.
First, the lo mein was the predominant ingredient in the bowl. I was hoping for more of a balance of protein/ vegetables/ lo mein. While a few shrimp were tasty, most of them were not. They were really tasteless and seemed like poor quality. The vegetables and sauce were the worst. The vegetables were definitely previously frozen and I had more broccoli stems than I could count. The sweet basil sauce tasted like the package that Kroger includes in their take out spring rolls (sushi dept.) it was gloppy and artificial. The peanut sauce was fresher tasting. We paid $7.99 for each entree and for that price one could get a much better meal in a local authentic asian restaurant. Pei Wei (fast food concept from the same company as PF Changs) does this type of restaurant, fast food/ asian, MUCH better.

Just returned from lunch at A Taste of Asia. A couple of the posts above discussed the feel of the restaurant very well - neat, small, nice furniture including a couple of couches and chairs in case you stop by for a drink. Very nice family running it (although their very young daughter was a bit more active in the restaurant than I would have liked, but I'm a curmudgeon). The short and interesting menu has been described well above.

I had a monster bowl of pho beef. Nice flavors, not too bold until I threw in three slices of jalapenos that were available on the side along with bean sprouts, limes and basil. Could have contained a bit more beef, but the amount provided was fair for the price. Loved the noodles - from a couple of Asia trips this past year I've finally learned it's OK to huddle over the soup and slurp (my mother would have a heart attack - rest her soul). And, not a drop on my shirt!

I enjoyed the pho and the ambience, especially the personality of the owner. Will definitely be back in coming days/weeks.

My husband and I tried some sushi from there a couple weeks ago. We weren't impressed. The dumplings were good though.
