LEO/LHB: Breakfast is finger food at Queen of Sheba

Breakfast is finger food at Queen of Sheba
LEO's Eats with LouisvilleHotBytes

Let's face it: Breakfast can be as boring as, well, a bowl of oatmeal.

Even such treats as ham and eggs and crispy bacon just don't get one’s motor running in the morning anymore. Mexican desayuno at Zapata’s Corner or migas and breakfast tacos at North End Café? Been there, done that. Even the rolling carts of Chinese snacks at Jade Palace's dim sum seem so familiar now.

Not that any of these breakfast or brunch options are bad, mind you, but if they no longer bring the exciting shock of the new, perhaps it's time to wheel over to Queen of Sheba on a Sunday to check out an Ethiopian breakfast.

From 9 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. on Sundays, Queen of Sheba adds about a dozen Ethiopian breakfast selections to its regular lunch menu.

The wife and I popped over to Queen of Sheba last night for dinner, and were very pleased. It was my first foray back into Ethiopian food since Abyssinia (Frankfort Ave.) closed...uh...5 or 6 years ago?

The front part of the restaurant has a relatively normal casual restaurant feel; open and airy, with nice views of Bowman Field. Various Ethiopian items adorn the walls. The back is a more loungy area with tables created for the round Injera bread to sit down into.

We had the kitfo (freshly grounded beef mixed with seasoned butter and mit-mita, served with Aybe (home made cottage cheese)) and misir wot (lentil stew simmered in onions, garlic seasoned with turmeric and herbs), served traditional style on the large platter of Injera. The kitfo had a nice spice to it, balanced by the less spicy misir wot. Small side salads accompanied the food on the platter. Everything, including the salads, was remarkably fresh. The Injera was as good, if not better, that what I remember from Abyssinia.

Service was attentive and very helpful. Two entrees (leaving me enough for lunch today), a Guisness, a soda, a baklawa (baklava) to go, and 20% tip came in right at $30. We will be back, and often.

I believe the same couple has operated Abyssinia and both iterations of Queen of Sheba, so if you saw anyone who looked familiar, there was a reason ...
