Lamb Shanks

This might be a strange request but, oh well.

We went to the Greek Festival a couple of weeks ago. If you've never been, please go some time. Wonderful food and delightful people. They had numerous Greek delights and I couldn't resist the lamb shanks dinner. On my. They were wonderful. So, here's my question. Does anyone know where you can purchase lamb shanks (to cook) around here? Thanks!

I don't think they will be that hard to find. Certainly, with a phone call, Kingsley on Taylorsville Road can have them for you.

I know for sure that the Prospect Kroger has them. Not sure about other locations. They arent in the butcher display though - look over where all of the pre wrapped steak/pork is.

lamb shanks

by Andrew Mellman » Mon Jul 02, 2007 10:04 pm

It's more of a winter dish, as it has to cook for several hours, so in winter I know all of the Kroger and Meijers stores carry them (it's one of my favorites - if they don't have it they'll get it in a day for you). Now, along with Prospect Kroger I'd try Meijers - not all the time in the summer, but usually have some.

Lamb shanks from Stan

by Ward Wilson » Wed Jul 18, 2007 9:59 pm

Stan Gentle was selling them at the farmers market at Rainbow Blossom this Sunday. He's at the Beargrass Farmers Mkt, too. Occasionally at B'town Rd. Here's a blurb about the farm:

DreamCatcher Farm, located near Taylorsville, Kentucky, is 170 acres of beautiful Kentucky farmland that is home to grass-fed Devon and Angus cattle.

Through management intensive grazing, our cows are pastured on alfalfa, orchard grass, red clover, and other native Kentucky grasses. No pesticides or chemicals are ever used on our grasses. Likewise, during winter months, the cattle are given alfalfa/clover/orchard grass hay that is grown on our farm. No growth implants or hormones are ever used on our cattle. Antibiotics are used only in life or death emergencies. Never stressed or driven, the beef from these cows is tender and lean.

DreamCatcher Farm's signature item is a whole-cow gourmet ground beef. All cuts (steaks, roasts, etc.) are ground into the best ground beef anywhere. Our customers tell us it tastes like beef used to taste years ago, before all the chemicals, additives, and feedlots. DreamCatcher Gourmet Ground Beef is USDA approved for supply to restaurants, retail outlets, and direct sale to our customers. The DreamCatcher Burger is on the menu at Stan’s Fish Sandwich restaurant in Louisville. One-pound packages of the DreamCatcher Gourmet Ground Beef are available at Stan's, at all three Rainbow Blossom Health Food Market locations, and at Amazing Grace Health Food Market.

DreamCatcher Farm, Lelia Gentle, 3253 Beals Branch Road, Louisville KY 40207. (Farm located in Little Mount, KY.) (502) 896-6006.
E-mail: dreamcatcherfarm@bellsouth.net.

You know, although I think the Greek festival is a great idea, I found it lame. I didnt like being charged to get into it for one. If they want to raise money, there are better ways. It wasnt anything I couldnt get at any local greek restaurant. A few booths with open air food. It was totally anticlimactic to see something the size of someones backyard. Having been to the one in Chicago probably ruined me to Greek festivals anywhere.
Im not a food"ie", I am a food"er".

Whole Foods almost always has them, if you don't object to the "food miles" - it's natural lamb, but almost always New Zealand product. And as others have said, Dreamcatcher Farms and perhaps other local producers at the farmers' markets will sometimes have them.
