Sushi Wars

by Carolyne Davis » Tue May 04, 2010 6:42 am

Friday night the BF and I decided to have dinner at Maido, the first time since it is under new ownership. I was sooo very disappointed. Maido has always been quirky with eclectic music and art, interestingly pierced and tatooed servers and amazing food. Not so any longer. Gone was the funky art, gone was the cool fusion jazz (replaced with boring whatever music), gone was any attention to good service and gone was really good food. Food was ok, just not quite as good as used to be. Service was terrible! When we first arrived we stood at the front door while who knows how many employees passed by us "on missions". We knew the bartender, who told us that the new kitchen was much faster than it used to be. Once someone seated us and we ordered, we got our grilled rice ball within a few minutes and 40 minutes later had to flag down our server to ask if we had been forgotten (the place was not that busy and it was later in the evening). Miraculously our food arrived so quickly, I couldn't decide if it had been sitting and waiting or just coincidently done at the same time! Our "server" never asked if we wanted refills on drinks....all in all weird experience.
Saturday we went to a Derby party and the BF was lucky enough to win a jackpot, so we decided to treat ourselves to Hanabi sushi in Prospect. This was 100 times a more plesant experience! Lovely spot with friendly and efficient service and wonderful food. Some very imaginative rolls and fresh and tasty oysters. It was very reasonably priced...I am sooo sad about Maido. I wanted to love it still. I hope they figure it out soon. Oh! This was a odd thing, we were on the patio at Maido and I watched the kid bussing the tables ake all the glasses and toss the leftover liquids into the bushes. Tacky!

Hi everyone! I'm very new to this forum and I just saw this post. I wish I could have responded much sooner. I just want to make some clarifications about the new ownership at Maido. The new owner is SiWon Yu. He was one of the original sushi chefs that helped start Maido, and make the restaurant what it is today. The concept of Maido has not changed. By concept, I am including the menu, staff (front and back of the house), artwork, and beer list. Everyone that works at Maido has tremendous pride in the restaurant and we all want to see it continue to succeed. I apologize to the original author of this thread for having a negative experience. We invite you to return and ask for me. I will make sure you are happy :)

One side note...sushi is made to order. On busy nights, like Oaks or Trolley Hop, sushi will take much longer than hot items.

I've always had really slow service there, even when it's dead. BUT I love the happy hour, and many of the food choices, and the great beer list...so I suck it up. I walk in expecting crap service, then I am not dissapointed lol. The servers there really don't seem to care about their jobs, and are put off when you ask for something.

Yes, it's true. We don't have a "TGI Friday's flair" kind of mentality about service at Maido. BUT, I can say for certain that every single one of us cares very much about the happiness of our guests, AND our jobs. If you are in any way unhappy with your experience, please say something, so that we can make sure your immediate needs are addressed.

We have dined at Maido several times since the change of ownership, and I found everything to be pretty much the same. We didn't even know of the change until we found out afterwords.

So, I haven't noticed any drop in quality on any level, but then I realize that we all have different experiences. For what its worth, I have found the service at Dragon King's Daughter, to be consistently, shall we say, "interesting", although I enjoy the food, especially the pizzas and a roll I can't recall with the word "hawk" in the title, which may be my favorite roll in the city.

Just a quickie second to Hanabi in Prospect!

They have more (and a wider variety of) rolls than any other place I've seen in Louisville, and - even more important - they are fresh and good! I'm very hesitant to recommend them, as sushi service can be slow with only two chefs working most days, and any increase in patrons could slow them down, but this is just too good not to recommend.

BTW, I've never tried most of their menu rolls, as they always have around 5-6 "specials" on a white-board when you come in that have the freshest ingredients.

I really like Oishii a lot. Also Sapporo, and Tokyo on Lime Kiln. Wasabiya? I still haven't forgiven them for selling rank, leftover fish for weekday lunch.

Have had sushi only once in the last 2 years after eating it regularly for a few years before that. Kind of have lost touch with the sushi options in town. Seems there are a good number of them - many more than say five years ago. Not sure if this is a good or bad thing. What are there now, 15 places to get sushi in town? More? What's the quality at these places?

Not sure if Louisville needs 15 sushi places, but that can be said about just about anything. Long live the free market.
Thinks the frosty mug is the low point in American history.

Why?

Apparently my comments on HotBytes were reported to them before the photographer got there. Remember, print lags behind online. (Also as a result of this, as much as I hate to lose the immediacy of it, I'm trying a little harder not to "step on" my print reviews by giving away too much on the forum or Facebook, although certainly online readers do get a head start.)

We are lucky in that we are at the point where around 10 sushi places are very good! (and no one has mentioned the one way out Bardstown Rd whose name I can never remember!)

I agree that Oishi is exceptionally fresh and inexpensive; my only problem there is that if you get to basics, they have around 4-5 fish with some variations (likely why they are so fresh). Sopporo - and even more so Hanabi - have literally dozens of different rolls. When we are in the mood to experiment and have fun with it, we go to Hanabi (closer) or Sopporo. If we want some standards that don't necessarily ring any "unique" bells we hit Oishi.

Just one man's opinion . . .
