Best Hot Brown in Town?

by Ryane Norris » Mon May 03, 2010 11:27 pm

My parents are coming into town this weekend and they are bound and determined to try a hot brown. I think they saw one on the food network. Anyway, I have no idea where to take them. Which place in town has the best? Please and thanks!! : )

I'm right fond of the Hot Browns at Captains Quarters and Westport General Store. I guess this time of the year I'd be more inclined to go for CQ's if for no other reason than the view...The Bloody Mary's are right fine in both locations.

The obvious option of course is to go for the original and hit the Brown Hotel.

Our Hot Brown at Brownings is one of the most popular dishes we sell. Please give us a try at 401 E Main St, corner of Jackson & Main.
Thanks! :D

The Hot Brown
“ A Louisville Tradition since 1926” Roasted Turkey Breast and Toast Points Covered with Sauce Mornay, Parmesan Baked Golden Brown and Finished with Bacon and Tomatoes. last time i had it was few months ago it was about $14.00.
the inside of the hotel is old world like. i think you would enjoy the atmosphere. :)

Agreed!! Take them to the original place. In my opinion, this is the best hot brown in town. The others are variations, which are good in their own right, but they aren't the original.

I third The Brown Hotel. Go straight to the source.

If you don't want to do that, The Bristol also does a good one... and you can get an order of green chili wontons to go with it.

Not to be picky, but in the Louisville spirit of "things where things used to be," bear in mind that the Brown Hotel is where the old Louisville (city) Board of Education used to be, and before that it was vacant for a while; the original Brown Hotel had devolved into pretty much of a fleabag by the '60s, then closed. When the current Brown Hotel came in, it was a great thing for the city, but it's worth noting that it's not directly connected with the original and has no corporate continuity.

The current BUILDING is the original one. But it stopped being a HOTEL in the '60s. The Louisville Board of Education eventually took it over. After the city and county school systems merged with busing in 1974, the offices eventually moved out to the school board on Bishop Lane. At some point after that it was renovated and reopened as the Brown Hotel, but there was a 20 year gap, and to the best of my knowledge, current management and investors are related to the original only by using the historic name and restored property.

So... was the Hot Brown invented in the "old" or current Brown hotel.?

Oh, the old. Tradition takes it back to Prohibition days in the 1920s. The recipe currently displayed on the Brown Website is said to go back to then, but as noted, there's a lengthy gap, so other than pride of location and name, the current Brown can't really claim a continuous tradition.

Wild Eggs has a good hot brown. It's a little untraditional though - a fried egg on top! :D

I was in that building in the late 70s when it was offices, etc for the school board. They would rent the ball room out for dances and such. It was a run-down nasty place. The restoration was amazing and a fabulous addition to the city.

I have to vote for WGS. I seriously could eat several platefuls of their hot brown! It's a good thing I live far enough away to keep my cholesterol in check.
