Cuba Libre now open in Jeffersonville

by Lois Mauk » Thu Apr 29, 2010 7:39 pm

Cuba Libre is now open in Jeffersonville. I haven't had a chance to eat there yet, but I stopped in and picked up a menu, which I've scanned. You can see it at:

From the Jeffersonville Evening News:

April 28, 2010
By DAVID A. MANN, Jeffersonville Evening News
David.Mann@newsandtribune.com

Across town, at 1725 East 10th St., business partners Leo Lopez and Nairobi Aparcedo just opened Cuba Libre. The restaurant offers traditional Cuban food prepared by a Cuban chef.

Though it’s only been open a few days now, Lopez said the new place has had some business so far.

Asked about favorite dishes, they recommend the Cuban sandwich, which consist of roasted pork, ham, Swiss cheese, pickles and mustard on pressed Cuban bread. They also point out the pernil de puerco asado — slow roasted pork marinated in citrus juices, garlic and Cuban spices.

Nearly everything on the menu is less than $8, including with sides, Lopez pointed out. The only item more than that is grilled top sirloin, and it’s $9.99.

Lopez and Aparcedo are Jeffersonville residents. They said they wanted to open a restaurant in Jeffersonville because they didn’t know of any Cuban restaurants on this side of the Ohio River.

Thank you for posting this, I wanted to stop by and pick up a menu to see what vegetarian options they had. I can walk over and try it very soon.

Picked up dinner at Cuba Libre tonight. We got the beef empanadas (Empanada de Carne), the Cuban sandwich (roasted pork, ham, Swiss cheese, pickles and mustard, hot pressed Cuban bread) and the sweet potato fries (Boniato Frito). Absolutely awesome. Everything I'd hoped for and more!!

I have a new favorite spot for dinner and it's close to home! I work in downtown Louisville, so weekday lunch is not an option for me. But I urge you to give this place a shot if you're in the vicinity.

If you stop in, be sure to tell them that you heard about Cuba Libre on the Louisville Hot Bytes.

It's not so much a review as it is a soft "news" story, but C-J writer Jenna Esarey has a piece in this morning's Courier-Journal highlighting the new CUBA LIBRE restaurant in Jeffersonville. See:
http://www.courier-journal.com/article/ ... or+of+love

We had dinner there again last night. Ate in the dining room this time instead of getting carry out or delivery. Truly awesome meal! Had the special -- smoked pork chop with grilled onions; very tender and delicious. The Frijoles Colorados was a perfect side (think really thick, delicious bean soup).

If you're in the area, give Cuba Libre a try. I posted their menu a couple of weeks ago at:

Tell them you heard about them at Louisville Hot Bytes!

I've been twice already. It's very good, I hope it lasts unlike the previous 3 occupants of that spot.

We just ran out on a whim tonight to try this place and I am SO happy we did....it was amazing. Best Cuban food I've had, maybe ever. The ambiance is not super nice but the food, wow, did I mention I liked the food?

Amy, I'm so happy you like it! Did you get a chance to meet Leo, the owner? REALLY nice guy.

P.S.: I see you live in Jeff. Remember -- Cuba Libre DELIVERS!

The menu looks almost exactly the same as another Cuban place in town. This reminds me of the old McDonald's/McDowell's bit from Coming to America.
