Hats off to the soup chefs at the Uptown!

by BenjaminH » Thu Apr 29, 2010 12:54 pm

I love soup. At its best it can be such a comforting, nourishing, and delicious way to eat. And generally economical too. But I have to say that most soups in restaurants, even in expensive restaurants, aren't usually that impressive to me.

My first exception is Jack Fry's, which has a famous daily soup of a creamy tomato-artichoke that is an absolute delight. It's so rich that a cup is all it takes. Fantastic. And their daily specials are quite good too.

But my favorite place for soup, as you already know from the title, is the Uptown. They have such varieties of flavors--different specials all the time. And their soups tend to be hearty, flavorful, varied, and just plain delightful. And what a value! The "cups" of soup at the Uptown are almost the size of the bowls at other places. And a bowl of soup at the Uptown truly makes the heart of an economical and yummy meal.

I've been enjoying the soups at the Uptown for 10 years, and right now I can't think of a time when they let me down. They are doing something right there, and I just wanted to say thanks....And to encourage people who might not have tried one of the many soups available at the Uptown over the course of the year to give one a try...

I am a soup aficionada as well. I have never tried the soups at Uptown, but will have to after your recommendation.

Can I add that I have had one spectacular soup after another at Caffe Classico? They always have new and different special soups, and the fact that they are almost all fantastic is borderline bizarre to me.

Antonia: I've never been to the Cafe Classico. Where is it? Sounds great! Thanks for the suggestion...Will definitely try it.

Caffe Classico is on Frankfort Avenue, street number 2144. If you're heading towards downtown, you'll see if on your left right before you cross the RR tracks. A lovely place. Here's their site:

Antonia - you just reminded me of a wonderful white bean, sausage, kale soup I had at Cafe Classico back when it was cold outside. Delicious!

Uptown never gets much ink on this BB and I'm not sure why ? One of the best restaurants in town and definitely the best bang for the buck.

I'm kinda with you on that, Mark. Not a slight to the forum, but a helpful reminder. That place is solid. Never had a single bad experience with their class A food, seasoned staff, and totally reasonable price points. Premium location, too.

The desserts are among the best. I assume the two ladies are still there. Don't remember their names but they also did the desserts for Cafe Metro.
