Thank you LHB!

by Becky M » Thu Apr 29, 2010 11:46 am

We are moving, (almost done.....almost done...you know, when you think a room is empty, but it's not, you have that miscellaneous stuff you just want to BURN?!?!?!?) ANY-way!

As i packed up my kitchen i thought about LHB a lot. I took note of the investment i made in my pots, my roasting pan, my vintage Kitchenaid mixer (LOVE IT!, but the real difference i noted was in my pantry.

I felt proud of myself as i packed my different oils, before all i knew was vegetable oil, period. Now, i have a few different olive oils: fresh & fruity, mild & mellow, dipping; other oils such as sesame, hazelnut, etc......sometimes i dont know what the heck to do with them, but i bought them and love experimenting and just learning how to use them. i also have some different vinegars, chili paste, Durkee sauce, and a lot of other things that i can't remember right now.

I have a bunch of different flours as well. Whole wheat, 50% wheat & 50% white, soy flour, spelt flour, white lily just for biscuits, etc. I have good vanilla, bourbon vanilla, flaxseed, different types of fresh peppercorns, different syrups for baking, etc.

we eat a lot of fresh veggies, and i can proudly say i had very few canned things to pack.

and i have real butter, lots and lots of real butter!

I don't go to Lotsa Pasta, Whole Foods, and the other places that are usually mentioned. But i still have tried to get good quality things that i can play around with.

We do not go out to eat as much. (of course this week has been the exception, Tuesday in between trips i asked my daughter, "what do you want pizza or chicken?" arghhhh! she actually twisted her face and said, "i guess chicken." i just keep telling myself: this will be over, this will be over, we will have a normal meal again.) We used to go to Denny's a lot, it's affordable (somewhat) and close to us. But one day i looked at my plate, and for some reason my reheated-once frozen chicken fried steak and sad looking veggies, just looked well, like reheated meat and sad veggies. It was like a moment of reckoning, i said to myself, this IS NOT worth what i am paying for it; i don't want this.

so, we don't go to denny's anymore, havent been to chili's in almost 2 years. if we want to eat something we go to Indi's or a local taqueria, or when i treated my husband and i to Joe's. Yeah, they are not fine dining, and i would love to experience the flavor explosions that are often discussed here, but i am at a season in my life where that just is not possible. And i am OK with that! My husband and i actually really enjoy sitting at the little counters with the music blaring enjoying some great little tacos, it has become kind of "our thing". We both eat very well, share moments, give the guys a great tip, all for under twenty bucks, you just cannot beat that.

I believe i joined this forum when i was pregnant with my oldest son, he will be three in May. I have learned a lot here. I don't jump in on a lot of the discussions, but i read them all the time. Always learning about different foods, cooking, etc. I love it and i am different because of it. Even though i cannot go to all those great restaurants, i know what is out there and i have made the decision that i want better. So, i just stick here, do what i can, and just enjoy the rest through others!

and i just wanted to say THANK YOU! :D :D :D

Where might this be? Sounds like a taco shop I need to visit.

It is actually a carniceria. It is in Clarksville called La Rosita. It has a small produce section, meat counter, and all the cool Latino brands that are dear to my heart. Towards the back there is a small area with counters, stools, and a huge grill. they serve tacos, roasted chicken, and burritos. The tacos are $1.75, and the pieces of lomo are huge, falling out of the sides of the double tortillas, the secina is also great! I think you recently made a comment that we were just regular people that liked burgers, pizza, and tacos. I was shaking my head in agreement with you so much.

Is it right off Blackiston Mill Rd? If so, I have seen it a few times. I usually eat at the La Rositas' in New Albany, but they don't have the atmosphere you are describing.

Discussions of pizza, tacos, wings, bbq, sushi, caviar, foie gras, and waygu all have a rightful place on this forum as far as I am concerned.

It is off Blackiston Mill Rd, right across from Kroger. But it is not like the La Rosita's (Israel Landin)in New Albany. we have been there, awesome pork chops! This is completely different, but also very, very good.

nope not moving away, just across town still here in Jeff.

Funny story about the house.....

We were looking to rent another home, we outgrew this one. So my husband and i were looking like crazy. I would go during the day with the boys, went looking after work with my husband, spent whole weekends searching. Couldnt find anything that fit what we were looking for.

We did find two great house in Floyds Knobs that we were big enough for us and in our price range. I spoke to the man on the phone, gave him our info, and he was super excited. He said for us to go right over and that we could pick whichever house we wanted. So there we go, cash in hand..... it's a Friday afternoon and we are thinking this is going to get done. Well, we meet the guy at the first house and i could tell he was......(i dont know how to put this)......i guess he has his own predispositioned opinion once he met my husband. It all went downhill after that.....for some reason or another the houses were not available, and he didnt know when they would be, and blah blah blah........

needless to say, we were frustrated, disillusioned, and tired of the whole thing. So, i prayed for a house. Not what i wanted, but what i needed. I was wanting a lot in a new house, but all we really needed was ONE room, and i prayed for just that, ONE room.

Well, God gave me EXACTLY what i wanted. The new house, is the EXACT same floor plan, with the exception of: ONE extra room.

i said to my husband.......... i should have asked for a car!

Happy to hear you found what you needed, but sad to hear this guy was a jerk. In case it ever happens again, don't forget that discrimination in housing violates the Fair Housing Act. Just mentioning it to a potential landlord that you feel is discriminating should get his or her ears to perk up.
