AJ's Gyros

by Mike D » Tue Apr 27, 2010 3:59 pm

Becky and I crossed the river this afternoon to visit friends near Georgetown. On the way back we stopped at AJ's for a late lunch. All I can say is -- wow!! Becky had the falafel plate which she described as excellent, and I had a lamb gyros that rivals Danny Mac's cheesesteak as the best sandwich I've ever had. Our only regret is that it was a little too chilly to eat outdoors at their roadside picnic tables - we chowed down in the car. It's definitely worth a road trip.

Thank you Mike for your kind words. You will be pleased to know that I am now warm enough to take off the garage sale cardigan!!!

Great news! We have missed AJ's Gyros at Highlander Point. We will be heading to Georgetown as soon as possible.

Alison, are you open on Sunday? We have errands to run Sunday morning, and will be out that way around lunchtime.

Roger, we open at 12 noon on Sunday, although I am usually ready a little earlier than that. Look forward to seeing you.

Well, the downpour last night changed plans a bit, and we were finished with errands and gone at 10 a.m. This constitutes a genuine "rain check," and we'll make it out when you're actually open. Apologies.

My husband and I visited AJ's Gyros last Thursday for lunch. A bit breezy but the salad was wonderful and the beef/lamb gyros were better than we remembered. We will certainly be back!

I assume you have the falafel gyros there, right?! Best falafel I've ever tasted. My mom lives extremely close to you so I'll pay a visit soon. She's a vegetarian and she's been to your place, so I'm sure she already knew how good it was before I tried it for the first time at the old Highlander Pointe locale. How long have you been there, anyway? My mom's lived in the area for about 14 years and it seems like I remember her talking about you soon after she moved there (singing your praises). She was a cook (left a desk job to find her calling) at Lynne's Paradise in the mid through late nineties and wrote the winning recipe that beat Bobby Flay in the Throwdown (bourbon ball french toast), even though she was never credited for it, true story. She taught me how to love food and I grew up in part on falafel tacos when we lived in California while meat and sugar were taken out of our house. Hope it's okay for me to tout my mom's badness, I just can't stop myself when I mention her. She was always so progressive!

I wish you the best, Alison! See you soon!

Hey Jackie., Yes, we have the falafels here too. I opened AJ's in June 2004 and introduced the gyros in the September. My mum suggested I make falafels and I think I started doing them 2008. Look forward to seeing you soon.

Barbara and I found ourselves in Indiana today (you know, that whole "wander" thing), so we decided to check out AJ's.

What a treat!

The gyros were excellent -- the meat was just a bit crispy the way we like it. The fries were fresh, hot and delicious as well. My meal was accompanied by a creamy coffee shake.

And of course the topper was we had the pleasure of meeting the lovely Alison!

We stopped by on Saturday. We were delighted to find that the food was as great as everyone has said!

Actually Lois, I don't think the website works anymore. I suspect when things were really bad financially in the winter a payment got returned. Strange though, I did not get an email asking for alternative payment. We have a facebook page. A.J.'s Cafe and A.J's Gyros to Go. Can't delete the cafe bit unfortunately, have to delete the whole page and start again.
