Facebook "Like" buttons on some reviews

by Robin Garr » Sat Apr 24, 2010 12:54 pm

Hey, boys and girls. Facebook has set up a new arrangement by which Websites and blogs can add FB "like" buttons for your clicking enjoyment. As an experiment, I've added the familiar thumbs-up icon to our most recent three reviews, including my reports on the Blind Pig and Slugger Field fare and Kevin's report on Zanzabar.

Not to try to inflate the count or anything  but I'd like to play around with it, to determine for example what happens when people click on it if they don't have a Facebook account, or if they do but aren't logged in, etc.

So, if a few of you wouldn't mind bopping over to http://www.louisvillehotbytes.com and clicking a couple of the "like" buttons on the front page - assuming you DO like them, of course - I'll be in your debt, particularly if you get any funky results and don't mind coming back here to report what they were.

I'm guessing you have to have a Facebook account for it to work. It asked for me to login to facebook the first time I clicked the like button, and then prompted me for my password again when I clicked on a second article.

I just put them on the first three until I saw how it worked. :) I'll put one on Joe's pretty soon, either before or after this storm rolls through.

Hmm, I don't want to do it if it's going to be irritating to people. Did you find this particularly irritating, Todd, or would you probably have just ignored the button if I hadn't asked folks to test it?

No, not irritating at all. I tried another one after I was logged into Facebook for the Blind Pig and it worked without asking for my login information. One click and up the count went.

Thanks, Todd. Funny, the numbers don't seem to be incrementing in my browser. Maybe I need to close and restart it? A lot to learn here, but so many people are on Facebook these days, it seems like a good way to help the reviews reach out.

Robin, I think it's a good idea. I know a lot of people on there who go to restaurants I rave about in my status. I've influenced many people to try Red Pepper, VK, and Joe Davola's just to name three... some were even unadventurous eaters. Cool idea IMO 8)

Thanks, Adam! Of course, in addition to the new "like" button, the reviews have had a bank of Buzz, Facebook, MySpace and Twitter buttons across the bottom for quite a while. But just a one-click-to-"like" option seems handy.

It works fine for me and I didn't have to login a second time. Maybe it's how your account is set up. Looks like a great idea to give some of the locals more exposure.
