Tex-Mex Option?

by Jenny H » Tue Apr 20, 2010 5:03 pm

I am in the mood for some Tex Mex food tonight. Any suggestions? I am leaning toward the new Senor Iguanas that opened up but there are so many! El Toro, El Nopal, Fiesta Time, El Tarasco, etc. etc. Any of them above the rest?

Thanks!!!

We personally like Senor Iguana's better than any of the others. Although we haven't tried Zappatas and we've heard a lot good about it.

When El Toro first opened, I thought it was a cut above, partly because it had a lot of seafood dishes that weren't on the local standard Tex-Mex menu.

El Tarasco in St. Matthews also has been consistently pretty good.

I always really liked the place on Preston, the entrance was in the back of a shopping center... someone help me out here, what's it called?

We frequent El Tarasco 'cause it's in the hood, but I think Acapulco (in the Ramada/Zorn Ave) is a cut above. Expect leftovers.

We had pizza and Frascelli's in Crestwood last night and happened to notice the El Tarasco next door was deader than a doornail. MOF I'm in that area a lot and can't ever recall seeing the place even remotely busy. I'm curious...is it the food or the location ?...I dunno, I've never been in there.

For anyone who gets to La Grange, the Acapulco Mexican Restaurant (unknown connection to the Acapulco on Zorn) is pretty darn good. The service is great, the place is spotless and the food is a notch above most TexMex I've tried.

I think the one in La Grange is El Acapulco. Anyway, I've never seen the one in St Matthews where it wasn't slammed! They get all the little league teams, etc from the St Matthews area and there's a big appeal to families. It's got that large back room as well. IMO the place is a gold mine. Just don't get carry out there. Either they forget or they mess up the order. At least check it before leaving!

Puerta Vallarta is the number 1 stop for me.

So it's good? We just drove by there the other day en route to my sister in law's just up the hill off Zorn. For some reason, the idea of eating Mexican in a Ramada intrigues me.

I'll go along with that! One in New Albany, one in Jeff. Definitely among the metro's better eateries in this particular genre. I'm not sure I'd call it Tex-Mex exactly ... it's definitely Latino but a step closer to accommodation with Anglos than the taquerias. But if it has posters advertising phone cards to Mexico in the lobby, you know it's not Don Pablo's ...
