Dallas Recommends?

by Deb Hall » Sun Apr 18, 2010 6:54 pm

(Yes, I know there is a separate forum for this but this is an emergency, and this Forum gets the most eyes... )

I have to be in Dallas on business for three days this week ( arriving tomoorow night) , and then again at the end of May. Any suggestions for great food? I'll be staying near the Dallas Market Center both times and cabbing it if that matters. I also will have two evenings free, so if there is something I should try to see or do while I'm there would be great too.

Any suggestions so I'm not eating at my hotel would be greatly appreciated. :D

Thanks,
Deb

The Dallas Market Center is not in a particularly good part of town. There aren't really any great restaurants near it (unless you want to go to Medieval Times).

I've heard great things about Abacus.

If you are looking for BBQ, I suggest finding a Sonny Bryant's.

Mi Cocina has good upscale mexican. Taco Cabana has good downscale mexican.

If you can make it to the Nasher Museum, it's worth the trip.

Good luck in Dallas!

Edit to Add: Medieval Times is not a good restaurant, but can be entertaining. It's basically dinner and a show if you haven't heard of it.

Thanks, Will!. I figured Market Center would not have great eats, and honestly I'd like to see a little of Dallas. Are any one the places you suggest a reasonable cab ride and then someplce where I might wanted to walk around a bit? Or do you think I should have a car?

Thanks again,

I'd rent a car if possible. I'm not sure how cab heavy the area of town you will be in is. I haven't lived in Dallas for 10 years, but I go and visit family there at least once a year. I don't get much free time in the city, though.

Knox Street (off 75) is a decent area to wander around, and if you get hungry, Wild About Harrys is a great custard/hot dog shop.

My favorite burger place is The Burger House, which is in Highland Park (and might be worth driving through, it's where SMU is located).

Downtown Dallas reminds me of Downtown Louisville, there have been some attempts to revitalize it, but most are corporate offerings (unless you are interested in the World's Largest Hooters [restaurant] there isn't much I remember downtown).

My favorite steakhouse is Kirby's... but there are MANY other options to choose from.

Pappadeuax's is great, and something I don't think you can get many places.

Good luck in Texas! If you have a free day and decide to go to Fort Worth, it's a much different city... the water gardens are neats and Joe T Garcias is my favorite Mexican spot in Texas (no menus, enchiladas or fajitas, you can get queso to start and amazing sopapillas to end the meal). It's worth the drive for me, but that might not be true for you.

Will,
Thanks again for the advice. I ate at Mi Cocina the first night, and outside on the patio at Truluck (seafood) last night. Food at both was very good and I loved the vibe at Mi Cocina/West Village ; server at Truluck was fantastic!
Thanks for helping me enjoy what little free time I had.
