And the short one wants four whole fried chickens, and a Coke.

Out of order mate.... That's not what we're about here.

I've never met a nicer bunch of people than in Louisville. As a newbie and a small business owner, I have had nothing but support and love from this town.

You may not understand Louisville right off the bat, and that's a good thing. It's kinda kept the place the right size.

I assure you as a world traveller and someone who has lived in many cities in the states, Louisville rocks.

It may depend on where you are in life but anyone who has spent time here or grown up here, gets it and always returns.

The people are proud and straight up... As I'm sure you have noticed. You also get the sense that anyone can make a difference in this town as an individual. I'd like to see you find that in many other cities.

I say give it a chance!

Wow! This thread has gotten QUITE ugly and I am completely flabbergasted by some of the responses in here. I thought this forum was a friendlier place. Should be one hell of a welcome to Kentucky party.

Heather, I expect my party to be quite lovely. I think I am a fairly gracious hostess, and all the forumites who have signed up to come are quite lovely, decent people who are bringing great noshes and sippers. I do think that Phil and Donna will be "welcomed" to Kentucky. :D

I have enjoyed your hospitality Gayle, not only was it gracious, but the company was well kept...

And not a person in the room who didn't enjoy Malbec before it become popular... even in New York. Not that NYC isn't cool, but that Louisvillians don't give a sh!t. We have never been like so many other mid-cap cities that aspire to the blessings and corruption involved with being a big city. Yet, we are second only to LA in land size, and we elect one good man as mayor for (as long as he wants the job,) our basketball coach spent decades here, retired and will spend out the rest of his days, with his people. If you dig this, fine. If not, fine.

And let me encourage you to post a link to a website of NY foodies that is as vibrant, yet respectful as this. Even when one our own may have stepped over the line, the community steps in and corrects them. No shame or damage to the individual. Just one big, dysfunctional family!

The key to enjoying this city is tolerance. Forget what you think you know and get into the culture as it is, not as what you think it should be.

Gayle - I in no way meant to disrespect you or your wonderful hospitality. I really didn't. It just struck me as a bit odd to have this thread with some quite nasty jabs up here where it seems as Phil is now moving away, and then to have your sweet thread about a party to welcome them to Louisville on the same board. That's all. I definitely meant no disrespect to Gayle.

With a couple of very small exceptions, I really haven't seen the apparent hostility that some others note. I expect Gayle's party to be interesting and fun, and I expect the sort of conversation here is exactly the sort of thing that would happen at a social gathering such as Gayle's. But many of us also know, I think, that when it happens in a social gathering people take it for what it is, lighthearted banter but also some serious discussion where some folks simply disagree and then lighten it up with playfulness, which is exactly what happened here.... Maybe I'm just used to heated discussions with friends and family. I think folks can have very heated disagreements and still consider it a friendly exchange.

(Like others, I do lament the rare gratuitous insult, but that's life. It's good that folks note it, I think.)

Phil had a negative impression of Louisville before he even moved:

http://www.city-data.com/forum/louisvil ... e-but.html

Click his name and search his posts under "enofile" on city-data. I have offered to give Phil a personal, in depth tour of the city. He wasn't even polite enough to reply. Instead, he called myself and others provincial and arrogant. Anyone willing to leave his wife in a strange city because he honestly thinks it is that bad, well......no comment :P I just recently noticed however, that Phil showed class and send me a PM apologizing for some of his harsh words.

I don't think there are many people on here who have not acknowledged the flaws with Louisville, but we have all traveled, many have lived in other cities, and we all know that for mid-sized cities, Louisvile really is a pretty nice place! Those who disagree are in the minority, but that is not such a bad thing. I think Phil makes some EXCELLENT points about some things Louisville lacks, he just doesn't know how to say it very well.

Gayle,

You are FAR BEYOND being a "fairly gracious hostess" and if I may be so bold as to repeat what I have told you privately...I only hope the gathering you are hosting means as much to Phil and Donna as it meant to Becky and I when you hosted our "Welcome to KY" ver. 1.0 party. My only regret is that hurricane Ike prevented several people from attending what was a lovely party. You ARE the hostess with the most-ess.
