My fiancee doesn't even drink beer. Her drink of choice (at home at least) is a sweet tea with Firefly. (I know, I'm working on it. )

However she loves going to NABC, and will sometimes suggest that we go just because she loves the food so much. I just have a hard time imagining people who are so set in their ways that they won't even try a new restaurant because they don't carry a particular type of BudMillerCoors.

To me, it seems as if people like that are desperately clinging to their brand loyalty as if it was a life preserver, while they're adrift in a sea of beer that is becoming increasingly foreign to them. In my opinion, it is either time to start swimming or start drinking!

Killing ??? Only open on weekends, with the exception of Phoenix Hill - I believe the company that supports those 3 keeps that Social Club place open 7 days to try to sell that concept which has already changed hands recently.
O'Sheas, Molly Malones, Flanigans, NachBar, Monkey Wrench, BoomBozz, 7 days a week selling both local craft beer and macros with many more to list

Howl at the Moon, Saddle Ridge and Tengo are open all week until 2:00 a.m and the others being open at least Thur, Fri, and Sat. I can't believe the tax payers are they only source of revenue these places are getting. These places have to be turing a profit (by only selling swill) or they wouldn't stay open. I have been to 4th Street about 5 times (all on Fri or Sat) and there is never a shortage of people paying $4-$5 for a bottle macrolite.

The Irish bars all serve craft beer but also sell macrolites.
I will never be convinced that there isn't good money to be made in selling macrolites. There are too many places that are already doing it. Do it drink it, hell no. I'm having a Bell's Expedition Stout as I type this. Do I hold it against people for selling it, hell no. As long I can get something I like, and the lite drinkers can get something they like, the place a greater chance of surviving. This is a good thing for me, you, and everyone who enjoys good beer.

Enlighten me. I don't really follow politics at all. I'm always willing to hear both sides.

One component you are missing that I know the BBC taproom and Rich O's do not have is hard alcohol. I've seen plenty of macro beers being sold at the establishments above, but a component in bars that tends to have a higher markup is the hard alcohol. The margins on "well" drinks in bars is pretty good, and in most part is better than beer, whether its micro or macro. That helps those places do well too.

Agreed. I am speaking from seeing a line of people at the beer tub waiting to fork over $4 for an ice cold Bud. That's right, people wait in line to buy $4 Bud's.

And not just those places. On warm summer nights, there are shorter lines at the bars at O'Shea's, Flangan's, and Molly Malone's than there are at the beer tubs, where the offerings tend to only be aluminum bottle macro products.

Go figure.

And yes of course we also have beer tubs on warm summer nights, aluminum you are offering 4 more ounces per beer for $1 more usually ( not rocket science on that one ) and also females scantly clothed working the beer tubs is also a mainstay to sell macros to a crowd in that gender range which a majority of the taverns quoted attract

Even last night I had a hard time coming up with a place for 5-people, which ultimately decreased to 3. 3! My first choice was the BBC, but was happy to settle with Dundee Tavern. I had a NABC B-15 Porter and a Browning's ESB. One friend had a Stella or two. Other friend had his usual Jack and Diet.

In one vision of my perfect world, I'd be surrounding by friends that make drinking choices based on the same reasons I do - to support local brewers while consuming the best product possible. But, that would also mean that these people would probably be very much like me in many other ways. And, well, that would be boring. So, I pinpoint my "dream" drinking location on a given night and then negotiate from there. With this group of friends, I've had drinks in the last six months at Browning's, Cumberland, BBC, and BBC on 4th. I guess I'm just lucky and have open-minded friends. At the same time, these friends, from time to time, want "that drink" they can't get at those locations. So, yeah, compromise...luckily it's never compromise to the "swill beer" level.

Very happy to see the local, independents on the beer menu at Dundee. Congrats to them for expanding their selection (BBC Bourbon was on the menu as well) and congrats to the local brewers for expanding their market.

Dundee Tavern has always been my first choice when going out, as you said an excellent beer selection, fantastic menu and a warm and welcoming staff. I wonder if they have ever been reviewed ?

Any idea of your ratio of beer sells comparing micros and macros? I've been to CQ a few times in the summer and see a majority of people with a macro in their hand.

I have not followed this thread at the level where I am reading every single post, but the recent discussion of aluminum bottle purchases reminds me of two important "reasons" people I know drink shit beer: calories and ABV %.

Some people want to watch their calorie intake, so they go with Mich Ultra, a lite beer, etc. Other people want to consume (measured in ounces) as much alcohol as possible so they go with a lite beer*, which is surely under 5%. I can only try to remember how many Milwaukee's Best Lite (better known as "Beast") I used to put back in my college days. Beast provided all the "coolness" of drinking without the effects setting in for many, many hours. Other people I know drink lite beer because they don't like beer but they drink it anyway. Glorified water with a little alcohol is what they want.

I don't know enough about brewing to know how brewers cut back on calories - although I know doing so, like with anything else, cuts back on taste. I also know there are session beers out there that can very much compete with "lite' offerings in regards to ABV. But, if someone is making a beer choice based on either calorie count or low ABV, there's little tasty, full-bodied micros with a decent ABV can do to compete.

America's weird moral disdain for drunkenness but capitalistic acceptance of it is surely wrapped up in this context.

* For whatever reason, these are the same people I see adding in a Jaeger Bomb or Car Bomb throughout the night. Don't really get it...

There are basically only 2 factors for # of calories in a beer (and one of them dominates).

1. ABV - the more alcohol the more calories.
2. Residual sugar - the more unfermented sugars, the more calories, but really this is a minor point

So, a higher alcohol beer is going to have more calories than a low alcohol beer.
A sweet beer is going to have more calories than a dry beer, at same abv level.

Which is why the Mich Ultras are basically low abv off-water.

And you will continue to see a majority of the people drinking macros. We just put in the keg coolers 2 years ago and added another with 4 tap handles, also I have several bottle selections of craft beers.

Like I stated it would be financial suicide to cater to one pattern of beer drinkers, but I also recognize the demand for local beer to be available and on a personal level I enjoy the local beers and also the profit margin they bring :D
