For me the local v chain debate is really simple. Unfortunately, I don't have the income at this point in my life to support local businesses as much as I would like (for example, a large portion of groceries come from Aldi's).
I agree with almost all (if not all) of Robin's arguments, so I will not repeat them. I simplify that argument (which is an ethical, political argument) to a question steeped in hedonism: "What is uniquely Louisville?" I want to experience all those things that are unique to the Louisville area (Cumberland, NABC, Za's, Mayan Cafe, etc. etc.). Knowing that I'm leaving Louisville in 2 years, I don't have the time or money to "waste" on cookie-cutter, run-of-the-mill places, no matter how great the food is. Chain and unique just don't work together for me. Steak and Shake at 3am, excluded.
So on a limited budget, it's a bottom-line issue. No matter how great 5 Guys is, there is somewhere local (and unique to Louisville) that I'd rather dine at. If I made more money and could dine out more often, I might bend my rules (though I hope I would not). But that's not my current situation.
For what it's worth, I had a friend recently move from Louisville to a Southern Bible Belt state in which brewpubs are not legal. About once a month I get a "enjoyed the BBC lately?" email from her. I just don't see me ever receiving the same email about fill-in-the-blank chain.
Thinks the frosty mug is the low point in American history.
