While I have eaten many, many burgers here in Louisville...my favorite is still the staple....W.W. Couin's.....so fresh, cooked perfectly, fantastic house made buns, and the toppings bar is flawless.

wow...After reading this thread I guess to try the best burger in the city I have to eat EVERYWHERE!!!! (which is fine with me!) I forgot to mention that uptown cafe has a really good burger. I used to eat that thing once a week, not so good for health but i worked right up the street and it was a staff favorite. I also have to plug the braised grape leaves with tenderloin, rice, lemon, and pine nuts. sooo good!

As a U of L Grad I can definitely say I have been to the Granville a few times and they definitely make a good burger. For me though, Joe's Older Than Dirt on New La Grange Rd in Lyndon makes the best burger I have ever had in Louisville. The side of their homemade chips usually doesn't even get eaten because the burger is so big.
For an upscale option I'm shocked the Bison Burger at Proof hasn't been mentioned. Cooked Medium rare this thing is awesome!

I am a huge fan of the burger at Jack's. I am a bit surprised no one mentioned the burger at Napa River Grill. I love the burger there.

I forgot to say Genny's Diner - despite all the (Sweet Daddy) hype, they make a great one - and you don't have to order the super huge size.

Yep, there are many great options in Louisville. So much so that there could probably be a few categories; high-end burger, "cheap" but great burger, etc., etc.

Biased since they're a block away from where I live, but both Flabby's and Check's make excellent burgers (even though they're known for other things). Haven't tried Zeppelin's bison burger yet but I hear good things (I know their bison's good since they get it from us!).

I'll second Proof for an upscale burger. The marmalade type topping is mmmmmmmmm.

Also, Jack Fry's burger is pretty darn tasty.

I have followed this thread and have come to the conclusion that no one wants to tell the real truth about what is the best cheeseburger in Louisville. I have had many that have been mentioned. All are vying for second place. Must be snobbery that is keeping the truth away.

Without doubt the best is from ....... The Porcelain Palace .. AKA .. White Castle.

Alas, I'm afraid you're mistaken Steve. I believe Juanita's Burger Boy is definitely the paramount burger in Louisville. That is, if the clock shows 3AM and the breathalyzer tells you that you should have stopped drinking half a dozen beers ago.

Actually, if those are the parameters, then I'd have to put in a plug for the ol' Dizzy Whiz. Hey, french fries by the quart? Bring it on! :D

After having eaten a most delicious bacon cheese burger for lunch yesterday (i was craving one thanks to this thread) I feel obligated to mention 5 Guys Burgers in New Albany. I know it's a chain and all but the burgers and fries they serve are totally yummy!

Not wanting to risk interstate traffic during rush hour, I got to the Party Mart tasting about an hour early today. I remembered your glowing praise for Shady Lane Ed, and I must say I was very impressed. The burger tasted just like the ones my grandmother used to make, and their homemade potato chips were warm, crispy, and fantastic. Thanks for the tip.

Some one else mentioned it, but I am fond of Turkey Joe's Burger. and their Turkey Burger is also good.

a second choice would be Goose Creek Diner's burger. Cut it in half and go to town with cheddar and bacon its Yummy.

I just tried the burger at Shady Lane Cafe and it was pretty good, not the best in Louisville but good. The service was super friendly and fast. I was suprised to see the dreaded preformed, mass produced patty come out he the fridge however. I was expecting some freshly ground meat and a handmade patty. Oh well, it was good and I'll be back for sure.

If your haven't tried the burgers at Indigo Joe's make a trip out to Westport Village, I think you will be happy. Yes it is a chain, but good burgers are good burgers. My favorite is the Ortega burger, but they have a wide variety.
