Robin - you know I love you, but I'm at a loss... will you please spell it out? Seriously, the only thing I can come up with is a reference to Michael Jackson, the beer compendium guide's (or whatever it's called) author?

I don't get any stereotype whatsoever - eating popcorn and watching the show. Is there a "Thriller" angle I'm not getting?

It took me a while, but I think I get what Robin was thinking, although I don't think that said stereotype is depicted in the scene below.

When one cannot find a single reference to racism and the Michael Jackson popcorn meme, I'm thinking there's nothing there (the first entry is all about racism, and they use the meme in the discussion, in the same way it was used in this thread): https://www.google.com/search?rlz=1C1__ ... orn+racist

Assuming it was race you meant by stereotyping.

They've not done that well in Germany, if memory serves. That speaks highly of the Germans.

Not really. Walmart lost $2 billion in their German foray. They basically bought a supermarket chain and, instead of stocking some of the cooler stuff you can get in American WalMarts, they just sold the same crap that was being sold in normal German hypermarkets. They got their clock cleaned in groceries because they didn't understand that discounters, with their shitay but super-cheap groceries own 42% of market share in Germany and are/were well capable of defending it.
So getting 42% of your food from the lowest common denominator doesn't say much for the German palate. Belgians, French, and Italians are not surprised by this.

I'm wondering why a white guy would post a picture of a toothy black face grinning idiotically and chewing with his or her mouth wide open. It's not exactly flattering and sort of reminds me of old minstrel show stuff.

I think you're misreading the meme. This isn't a minstrel grinning idiotically. It is Michael Jackson at the absolute height of his popularity as the biggest star in the world in the greatest music video of its time. I still remember where I was the first time a friend played the entire Thriller for the first time. Racism is a deep and abiding reality in the United States, and I think it still shapes us in all kinds of ways that folks don't want to admit. But not here.

Noted, with respect, although he still chews with his mouth open. :D

Bottom line, I was irritable before coffee yesterday that the meme resurrected a bad thread that was better left to die. As we keep on doing. Me, too.

To add to the Jackie praise...and to make an obscure Gilligan reference...Ive always kinda thought of her as the forums own Mary Ann....the girl everybody wants to be friends with.
The tall one wants white toast, dry, with nothin' on it.
And the short one wants four whole fried chickens, and a Coke.

Whoa whoa whoa Robin you read WAAAY to far into that! I don't even know what old minstrel show stuff is.

To me it's simply a man eating popcorn enjoying the show. Definitely a generation gap at play. Just a miscommunication though, no big deal.
