What about liability? Or, short of liability, a newspaper article - "Man bitten by dog at X restaurant" - that doesn't provide positive PR? Just doesn't seem worth the risk says the dog non-lover.

And what's the difference btw a patio and the sidewalk? I'm not even sure why restaurants are allowed to setup on sidewalks, but is the difference between A)private property and B)public right of way? Not really seeing the difference between a patio and a sidewalk (operating as a patio).
Thinks the frosty mug is the low point in American history.

That would be my assumption. Property owners may use part of the public right of way in front of their shop in a commercial district, but it's subject to regulation: You can't block the entire right of way, limit wheelchair access, and so on. From there it's no stretch for me to assume that the restaurant operator can say "no dogs" or whatever within his own property (patio) but not on the public property that he's using (sidewalk).

I'm virtually certain, by the way, that the Health Department does NOT ban dogs from outdoor premises, although it may be more comfortable for restaurateurs to place the blame on a regulatory agency.

At some of the restaurants mentioned the dogs may be licking their butts to get the taste of the food out of their mouths! (yeah, I stole that joke).

One store in New Mexico. Yes, it's a shame. But no reason to point the finger at the entire organization for one person's idiocracracy.
