I'm not surprised that JCPS is off but am surprised that UofL is. I don't know what goes into making such a decision, so I am going to keep my yap shut.

One of the things I've noticed on snow days is that it is often fairly easy to get around by car--the ease of which is partially caused by the lack of school buses, UL traffic, etc.

Do you believe it was a bad decision to cancel school yesterday and today for JCPS?

Personally, I don't think so.
Something to think about, snowfall varies greatly by area and we are dealing the county as a whole. Although the most of the main roads aren't that bad, get off into some of the subdivisions or rural county roads where the buses make the majority of pick-ups and drops and it's quite a different story.
I almost got run into myself several times on my way home yesterday around 3:00PM. It was pretty gnarly out there.
Heck, this morning on my way in, it appered that J-town's portion of Tayorsville Rd. and some of Hurstbourne were still like skating rinks. :? My co-workers who live in the South End said it wasn't that bad out there.

Also keep in mind when making vacation plans, with the five days to make up so far, the last day will currently be June 2nd.

Five pages of posts for a non-food topic.
Geez guys, I was just letting everyone know what was going on, being that we find out before you do. :D

As a parent of two JCPS students, I'm just happy they made the decision last night instead of 4:30 this morning.

My teacher-wife was rather pleased by that as well.

Sooooo.....what was the big deal today? Everyone was closed (except us here at Southern Seminary) You would have thought it was another ice storm. There was barely any snow on the ground!

Snow, Ice, School Closings or Armageddon won't keep us from crossing the crazy river to try out NA Exchange tonight! Plus...... I want to see what a new band called SIRCO, with some people I used to play music with, are up to.It's All Happening on the Sunny Side tonight! Except for Drivin & Cryin at Headliners. We'll probably end up there later!

Wonder what these folks would think about canceling school after 2.5 inches of snow. 8)

I like the way these guys think:
"After Andy caught his northern, we stopped fishing and immediately started drinking," said one of Schultz's travel mates.

More on topic  , my sis in law who resides in the Minneapolis suburb of Farmington, mentioned in an email that they have not missed a single day of school this year. She "sheepishly" admitted that they did have a few days that were on 2 hour delay when temps dropped to -15 or so.

It was -18 in Farmington last night for the annual Wild Game dinner at The Legion. My buddies report it was the best "Beast Feast" ever.

At the risk of sounding like one of "those" people ("We had to walk to school through 20-foot drifts in our bare feet..."), I grew up in central Indiana, where the winter weather is (typically) a little harsher than here, and I recall very few "snow days" when schools were cancelled--nor did it seem that Indianapolis was significantly better equipped to handle winter roads back in the 1960's; basically, if the school buses could navigate the roads (albeit snow-packed), schools remained open.

John, I grew up in upstate New York and like you remember very few days when we didn't have school because of snow. Nowadays even in that area they close more days than when I was a child. I think part of the reason they close schools more often is because of the number of lawsuits in today's society. I'm sure any parent whose child is on a bus that is involved in an accident contemplates filing one. I think the closings are more a result of being overly cautious than the actual ability of the buses to navigate the highways.

I would like to know if all the "we're-braver-than-you-in-the-snow" monkeys understand and realize that our metro area does NOT have the snow removal equipment and capabilities of, say, Minneapolis. We don't have all those plows or all that salt! And our every day drivers are not used to driving in it. We don't have snow studs or snow chains installed.

My side street, within sight of Bardstown Road, has been literally IMPASSABLE three times this winter. LIke, you couldn't drive on it. I could easily have driven on Bardstown Road....IF I COULD HAVE GOTTEN TO IT.

Please, I'm so tired of all the "you guys are so lame" posts. I don't have a plow attached to the front of my car. So happy for you if you do.

Edited to say: I learned to drive in the mountains of WV. I have no problem driving in snow, if I can just get ON THE ROAD. One of the school-canceled days this year I could not even walk across the street to my car without falling 6 times, it was that slippery. You want the kids and school buses out in that?
