Obviously, management should have been, and still should be notified. As a fine dining server, I have had a situation or 2 where an inappropriate tip was received. I don't believe an 18% tip is a questionable tip by any means. And there is no way all of Jeff Ruby's clientele is tipping well above and beyond that on every table where a server would be questioning it and comprehending it as a "bad tip." Hearing heather's story, her friend should contact management before brining it to this public forum. As for the server, in my experience when a tip was around the 10% range, I notified my manager and they took the situation in their hands and approached the guest as they were leaving with just a "how was your dining experience this evening, was everything to your satisfaction?" (without bringing up the tip) and getting the diner's response. We live in a crazy world and there is always 2 sides to every story.

Being single and paying my own check I was left feeling a bit slighted, ignored, and found myself mumbling. jeez it's a mans world. hmm

From the reporting about the coming Eddie Merlot's (http://www.eddiemerlots.com/Home-99.html), supposedly they target and cater to upscale, professional women, so you might want to try them next time.

Wow. Really? Thanks Brian, I might just do that.

Edit: Maybe I can become a member of the "Platinum club", or use the "private dining room"

Sounds more like a strip club then restaurant, it might be in my best interest to brush up on my "Dancing skills"

How did you verify it was the same incident? The same person in Heather's party?

Matt C wrote:being a server for over twenty years i thought that asking about a tip is very wrong but having opened jeff rubys ( i no longer work there ) i made some calls and found out the server did get in trouble for what he did. but i was told the tip was .93 cents . so unless the person who tipped had only a softdrink ,they did not tip 18 to 20 % . i got on this forum to post this because i was outraged that a person who is a sever would do that .but after hearing what the tip was from several people who were there .....

Hmmmmmmm... :?: ....Assuming we're talking about the same incident, and assuming both sides are giving an accurate description (and there is no reason to believe otherwise), maybe it's just a simple case where a digit got left off the receipt somehow (i.,e. the tip was meant to be 5.93 and instead got written down and/or rang up as .93).

I have to agree that no one would tip 0.93. If you're just tipping on a drink I would think most people would round up to 1.00. Sounds like there was something lost in translation.

I can see having a tip of x dollars and 93 cents if the bill was an amount that ended in 7 cents. For example, make the tip 20% and then round up so that the whole bill is an even dollar amount.

I've been following this thread and have thought, from the begining, that there must have been some sort of misunderstanding. It just doesn't make sense for a server to question an 18% tip. And for the record, I'm not calling anyone a liar. I simply stating that there are two (or more!) sides to every story. Mistakes happen. It is easy to mistake one bill for another of greater denomination, especially in a low-lit restaurant. It is also easy to make a mistake on a credit card receipt when you are engaged in conversation with your party. Likewise, as a server, it is easy to mistake the amount that has been tipped. (I did it once when I was tipped entirely with dollar coins.) It doesn't excuse the server of their behavior, but it certainly makes it more understandable. I'm of the school that a complaint should always be taken to management prior to posting it on a public forum, but I realize people deal with situations differently.
