I always heard that a lady wearing a hat at dinner is a different matter altogether-not talking a ballcap here, but say, a cocktail or Derby hat. I was to understand that this is totall acceptable.

Newbie or not, I agree with you..... as the wise Shock G of Digital Underground once eloquently spoke, "Wear what you like" . Truly prophetic words that I never thought I would have to repeat.

Count me in as well.....lame.

This was a pet peeve of my grandfather's that stuck with me as well as a bit of his style. There is something to be cherished about the mannerisms of past generations, there was a reason for everything and a show of respect went a long way. As Mark R. posted earlier there was more thought put into ones actions and what is appropriate or acceptable in situations. It irritates me to see people who are so absorbed with themselves that they do not understand that their actions have an impact on everyone else and that they are only part of society. People have taken individualism to such an extreme that nothing else matters besides themselves.

I enjoy walking through a door and removing my hat as a sign of respect to everyone else.

I believe that a lady does not wear a hat after 5 p.m. Hats are daytime dressing.

However, with the advent of the small "evening hat" that rule modified. An "evening hat" is small (much like the current day Fascinator) frequently jeweled or sequined and still shows off the lady's lovely hairdo.

It's been years since I read, cover to cover, Ms. Manner's Book of Excuiatingly Correct Behavior.

How about a hats offline!?

by Robin Garr » Sat Feb 28, 2009 1:55 pm

I have an idea! In the hope of restoring civility, fun and brotherly love to the forum in the wake of a contentious thread that some have declared "belittling" and others "lame," how about some time soon we schedule a

HATS OFFLINE

?????

The concept is simple: We pick an appropriate venue, and everyone who attends, regardless of age, gender or whatnot, must wear a hat. Hats to be user's choice. Fedoras are fine. Baseball caps acceptable, regardless of direction. Military officer's cap, Derby chapeau, it doesn't matter, as long as you come wearing your hat and keep it on. I'm torn between an old Irish Walking Hat and a classy wide-brimmed leather hat I picked up at a funky little shop in New Orleans once. This will be great! I never wear hats, and this will give me a chance to put on one of my rarely used treasures.

What say, all? Can we exorcise the lameness with a Hat Event? :D

Wait just a minute! Why is it going to be a HATS ON offline? Since it's going to be offline HATS need to be OFF as well! Besides many of the people who believe in etiquette would feel uncomfortable wearing a hat indoors.

Unfortunately, it's hats off indoors for us too (Derby or otherwise) though it's twice as hard for us to avoid hat hair than for guys with shorter hair. :( CD

I couldn't possibly wear a hat inside. It goes against my impeccable breeding and manners. And anyway they give me "hat head," which is just one degree from bed head. :D

In my opinion it's in no way rude to wear a HAT unless your at a Funeral,Wedding,High end Restaurant,or social event that requires a suit & tie.....that being said if you have friends that put conditions on your atire, then I would seriously rethink my association with such a snob, because no real friend would act this way. I would never ask a friend of mine that came into my home to remove their hat. This may be a very embarrasing request for your friend....there are many reasons why cancer,baldness,shyness..etc I would never be so stuck up to disreguard my friends reason for wearing his/her hat nor would I embarrass them in front of others. Some people are very rude to only think about themselves in this respect....we do not live in the 40's or 50's anymore this is 2009 and lot's of things have changed since those days and some for the better!
