I know on this side of the river, we've lost:
Bistro New Albany,
Stratto's
Rock Wall

All three were some of my favorite places to eat. At least I can still catch up with Dave at Carly Rae's.

Well...not exactly Todd. I de-camped from Carly Rae's shortly after Robin's most excellent review (for personal reasons). I am now heading up Speakeasy in glamorous downtown New Albany (though I know the good food and vibe will linger on at Carly Rae's under the skillfull hands of Chase/Eric/Jonny et. al.) Stop in for a beer on me and we'll chat!-Dave

You sly dog, you just keep moving on me. At least you are leaving a trail to find you and you moved closer to boot. Good luck with Speakeasy. From the 2 times that I have eaten there, they need your help.

Conner's closed in Nawlbany as well

but down down NA has also gained
the orchid cafe
the new conner's place
the market st fish house
-oh, i forget the name- but the building where conner's used to be
- the former NA bistro- now houses the Windsor ??

but Federal Hill wasn't open the last time i drove by "closed for remodeling"

and i've seen signs that a Barbecue restaurant is coming back to Hamburg

---
so how many new restaurants have opened during this same time frame???

Another (though maybe/hopefully a rumor) - a friend informed me this weekend with absolute certaintly that Asiatique would be closing soon, as the owner(s?) have decided to focus their attention on August Moon.

I'm hoping his sources were wrong. Can anyone speak to this?

Seems very unlikely to me, and really the sort of rumor that should be checked with management first. Chef Peng Looi hangs out on the forum, and I hope he'll respond promptly.

I understand that rumors do fly around in this forum and like all, Asiatique's closing is just another rumor. I just wish readers do check the facts before posting. Personally, I feel the pain to see so many independent restaurants have closed. This is terrible for the dining scene
As a matter of fact, we are doing another "Passion for Fusion" dinner series at Asiatique on Monday 10/27/08 with some exciting fusion cuisine.

I personally feel that rumors have no place here. I also post on other forums and some actually disallow rumors. Robin is a bit slack about such activity. I know he cannot police every post, but maybe a new rule needs to be invoked. In these days a mere rumor could shut down a local.

I think Rumors are fine here as long as they're posted as Rumors and not as fact. Rumors are not always negative, sometimes they're positive like a new restaurant opening etc. The rumor above was presented as a rumor and we rapidly got the truth. To me that's much better than letting the rumor fester in the shadows.

Well said, Mark. I do encourage folks to check out rumors before posting. It's not a matter of being "slack," it's a matter of saving censorship for very rare cases (such as spamming or idiotic behavior). Basically I'm not inclined to censor this group except under the most extreme circumstances.

Very sad to read about all these closings. I didn't even know about Rock Wall until just now.

A lot of my best "food" memories are from local restaurants that have since closed their doors. Bahama Breeze (it's a chain, but it was where my wife & I had our first date), Ferd's (our rehearsal dinner, an anniversary, one birthday), and Rock Wall (one Valentine's Day, one anniversary) are all gone, along with Harper's (was that a chain or not? Lot of good dinners there when we lived in the area).

Ah well, I guess this just means we'll have to find new local favorites when we go out to eat. Maybe one of you folks can suggest a nice local Italian so my wife doesn't keep dragging us to Macaroni Grille.
