I think this is a romantic and wonderful idea during the power outage:

"For all of you without power in Old Louisville, Amici Cafe is having a Candlelight Spaghetti Social this evening (Sept. 16) from 5p-8p. They have no power but they are carting in your choice of spaghetti, spaghetti with meatballs, or shrimp risotto served with salad and bread for $10. Remember NO POWER means CASH ONLY but they have an open bar."

"Dirty" Kroger open, sort of

by Robin Garr » Tue Sep 16, 2008 3:32 pm

We were over at Jackson's so swung back via Pope to Brownsboro to check it out (and maybe get some cat food). The Clifton "Dirty" Kroger on Lower Brownsboro is open today, but it's limited in several ways: Only about half the lighting is on (generator power, maybe), and they have NO perishables. All the cooler and freezer chests are dark and standing open, and the only semi-perishables available are bananas, oranges, peaches and the other fruits that sit out unrefrigerated. When we checked out, it appeared that there were no human checkers, only self-serve.

So ... okay for a quick pickup, and it was NOT crowded at 2:30 p.m., but it's not fully back on line.

glad too see most of the restaurants are back in order...especially the non-chain ones. Now if I could just figure out how to not sit in line at the gas station for 20 minutes crossing my fingers hoping they dont run out. It's a mess.

Sorry folks, we thought Melillo's would be open this evening, but after much cleanout and headache, our computer system is down. We've been told that all will be up and we'll be able to open regular hours on Wednesday. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Where do you live or work, Eric? The Marathon (Sav-A-Step) at the corner of Lexington and Payne, immediately adjacent to Jackson's Organic Coffee, had steady traffic but no lines at midafternoon, and was selling at $4.19. No guarantees about lines now that people are heading home from work, but since it's a street alternative to I-64 and most people are up on the Interstate, it might not be too bad. And if you get by before 6 p.m., you can roll through Jackson's drive-through on the same stop and let Christopher pour you a cup of most bodacious coffee. :)

DakShin Indian reopened tonight

by Robin Garr » Tue Sep 16, 2008 8:52 pm

Site of the fun forum offline a week or two back, DakShin Indian got its power back this morning, skipped lunch and reopened for dinner tonight. We were there, and they were right on form ... a wonderful regional Indian dinner (mostly Southern fare from Chennai with one Indo-Chinese dish, and extremely courteous and helpful service. Fine spot, worth the drive out to Eastland Center. (Just 8.5 miles from Crescent Hill by our odometer, but frankly it seems longer to me ... )

Kentucky BBQ Co. reopens today

by Robin Garr » Wed Sep 17, 2008 8:43 am

Just in from Dave Kastan at Ky BBQ Co in Clifton. Great to see our local indies coming back online!

Kentucky Barbeque Co. will reopen today, wednesday sept 17th, at 4pm, and we will go ahead with "Morocco Night". Due to the storm, I was not able to get the belly dancer, and I have not heard from SWS on the status of the Gamla Cabernet. They should be calling this morning,

Let's see ... a South Indian appetizer of masala fish (little bites of fried fish rubbed in a red, fiery spice rub, with lots of raw onion, and an Indo-Chinese appetizer of chicken with onions and a boatload of jalapeños ... hot hot hot! Then for mains, the Hyderabadi goat and a wonderful vegetarian dish of baby eggplants in a mild, thick, aromatic brown sauce. A big Kingfisher beer to share, and we were good to go. Our server, a guy from Mumbai with very good English, was super-nice, and the proprietor also came by, remembered us from the offline, and was very friendly and helpful. I didn't get a sense that they realized I do restaurant reviews ... we didn't get any special attention ... but they were being very nice to everybody. Lots of Indians in the crowd again, but attendance was a little light - because they had been closed, I guess.

Happily, the big traffic light at Breckinridge and Bardstown and also the shopping center exit at Watterson Trail were both working, and so was the main intersection at Taylorsville and Breckinridge on the way over. Breckenridge and Hikes Lane in that same complex was out, but traffic was doing the four-way stop thing quite well, and a couple of small intersections on the way out Breck were out, but <shrug>. I don't know if you come that way, anyway. :)

Was out in St. Matthews this morning and noticed that Lotsa Pasta, like a lot of larger grocery stores, is open with "limited inventory" - all the specialty foods in boxes, bottles and cans are up, under partial lighting, but all the coolers are empty and dark. A woman at the checkout said they do have meat and cheese sufficient to make sandwiches.

Along that same strip, Homemade Ice Cream & Pie Kitchen appeared open (all the signs in the windows were lighted), but I couldn't make out Stan's; also didn't think to look to my left and check the Fishery, sorry.

Primo is open. Because this is their last week, now would be a good time to go out and show our support for Bim and what he has done for the Louisville restaurant community. In fact, I think I'll walk down for lunch today!

Both Seviches are open! We still have plenty of room at the Goose Creek location.
