I've heard that point brought up several times before but I really don't understand when it does and when it doesn't apply. Take downtime St Matthews as an example, there are many places side by side that sell alcohol so why are they not affected? Also on Shelbyville road you have two large liquor stores directly across the street from each other? Does anyone know exactly how the law works regarding the sale of liquor? They're certainly seems to be a lot of conflicts in the application. Actually if you look at where TJs is located there's a place on either side that sells alcohol, Puccini and the sushi place (forget the name).

Maybe it's specific to the leases?

I believe that the liquor licences have to be a set # of feet apart.

I think that's it; there's also a distinction between retail (buying a bottle to take home or whatever) and bar/restaurant by the drink. I'll bet when you look closely at the side-by-side eateries, at least one of them has wine and beer but not liquor.

I agree with Bill. Not sure about restaurants/bars, but as for liquor stores, their entrances have to be a certain distance apart. That was the issue Liquor Barn ran into when it decided to place a store directly across the street from Beverage Warehouse. Liquor Barn couldn't place their front entrance on the Shelbyville Road side because it woud've been too close to the Beverage Warehouse entrance. That's why the Liquor Barn entrance is on the side street. Now, since World Market only sells beer/wine, not liquor...the rules could be varied. As far as I understand it, though, for retailers it's the distance between entrances that counts.

Driving on 264 East yesterday, I got off to go to Oxmoor Mall and noticed all the traffic backed up heading East on Shelbyville Road. The traffic was backed up around the ramp and onto the Watterson (the exit/entrance lanes and not the interstate proper). Right or wrong, I blamed Trader Joe's.

That end of town is becoming impossible to travel. I'll go to St. Matthews West and I'll go to Oxmoor, but I skip the section between Hubbards and the Watterson. It's terrible at all hours and adding that Trader Joe's is not going to help anything. Just a poor choice all around.

There's always the back way into that shopping center, I guess...

We went the back way in last night and had no issues. They are starting to run out of quite a bit of product though. Lots of bare spots on the shelves and in the freezers.

During rush hour or times I expect the traffic to be bad (holiday shopping) I ALWAYS go the back way. It's quicker and safer!

Re: trader joe's visit Sunday 30th

Suzi and I went out relatively early this morning after a lazy breakfast at Hillbilly Tea.

Thoughts:

95% of their products are labeled Trader Joe's or some formula of that. So companies are labeling products for them to sell. Much like Kroger, Mierers, Wally-World et. al.

Areas of the store were noticeably empty. In particular the frozen foods were at best 25% stocked. I am not saying low, they had rows upon rows empty. And some thing way overstocked cutting off the cold air flow. There are going to be some thawed shrimps at 1:30 today.

They had pre-packed Sushi that went out of date on 11/10/11. That is 11 days from today. We sometimes get sushi to go from stores, but I am NOT going to get that. Thanks but no thanks.

When we go there the lot had cars in it. We were probably 12-15 cars back from the front. We were inside about 30-40 minutes and the middle rows (closest to the store) were full to the drive lane out. And, you could see all the people lined up inside shopping. Church is out. I would not want to be in there now.

I am not sure who they are a competitor to. Certainly not to my old employer, The Fresh Market. Twenty-four feet of pre-packed and vac-packed meat is not going to compete with 64 feet of fresh cut to order meat. They did have some thing that looked interesting. Stuffed turkey breast for example. I don't see them being a big competitor to Whole Paycheck, except on price. I do see them filling that physical area niche for stop on the way home and pick up something for supper. They have a lot of what I call Lazy Food. I saw packages of diced onions, shallots & garlic and celery, onions & carrots. They did NOT have their beer covered up as required before 1:00 pm on Sundays, but bless them, the spirits store was closed so I could not savor nearly 3 buck chuck with dinner tonight. All their seafood was frozen and the appetizing is not a word I would use to describe it.

It's a grocery store. One that Louisville did not have. In a couple weeks the crowds will be gone. Not someplace we are going to go do weekly shopping. It is a place we will go in a few times a year to see what they have or for specials. I will visit the spirits shop to check it out.

Other things I noticed. I have opened 6 stores in the past 5 years, the Krogers at Hurstbourne/Westport and five for The Fresh Market. Every one of them had store management, district and regional managers at the store, shaking babies and kissing hands. Meeting and greeting. Making their presence known. I didn't see anyone who vaguely resembled that at the store. Maybe it's their policy. When we checked out they did NOT have any handouts to put in the bag and they did not solicit us to sign up for e-mail. And no upsell on their cold bags, even tho we did get some frozen items and cold items. (Policy)

One great thing they do. PAPER BAGS! I hate plastic bags. Too may are used. When we shop at Kroger, I always bag my own order. I can put a 55-70 dollar order for weekly shopping in two paper bags and not mash anything. I don't need 10-12 plastic bags. Trader Joe's you can keep up the paper bags.

I know Barbara is working there and hope she keeps us informed on upcoming events.

I also made it to Trader Joes today a couple of days ahead of when I planned, we got there about 10:30 am. Parking for us was no problem neither were carts. I spent more time in the produce area and the dried fruit section first thing opened when I got home were the dried strawberres....yummy. Didnt even try to get any cold stuff just because were were going to go to a movie on our way home but glad I didnt want to because as previously said it was very picked over. Liked the check out procedure not having to unload your own carts and also like the paper bags , I also found the staff to be very, very nice.

I dropped by about 4:30 this afternoon and a large amount of product was depleted. Many empty shelves, but LOTS of shoppers. I'll try again but I honestly couldn't find a good reason to stop by very often- except to say hi to the lovely Barbara A.

Which doesn't explain why Home Run Burgers he can't get one because of BW3. It probably does explain why TJs didn't go into Circuit City however.

Raw or roasted? Cause I can snack on some roasted cloves like they're puffs of popcorn. But this thread would not have had me so riveted.

Either. When the room is full of mega-chain vampires, I go through the stuff like peanuts. :D
