We got a Louisville Originals gift card for Christmas last year. First time we went to use it, I hadn't seen the fine print where it says you can't use it for gratuity, and was caught out with no cash.

Luckily I knew the server, told her I'd bring it back to her, and ran to the ATM after we left. Super embarassing.

I always leave at least five bucks if the bill is ten or more. I am luckily in a position that five bucks probably means a little more to a server than it does to me.

i remember once sitting next to an impossible woman who was being incredibly difficult to her server.(i had a different server) after listening to this woman act like a hollywood a-lister i felt horrible, so on the way out i found the server and gave her a five. i told her it was for having to deal with the acadamy award winner sitting in her section. she almost cried. to me it was just five bucks.
I tell you this not to make myself look good, (i'm an asshole!lol) just to point out how a good tip can really make a difference for someone who might be having a really bad day.

I don't remember where I read it, but there seemed to be a consensus among servers, that tipping over 30% was insulting/demeaning. It made the servers feel like that were being given handouts vs. earning a fare wage for working.

I found it to be strange when I read it then, but didn't seek others opinions. Just curious what both sides (mostly ITB) of the table/bar think about "over-tipping", if there is such a thing?

Uhm...NO! When I worked at the Hornet's Nest, it was almost always regulars in the place. Every once in a while one of them would give me a fifty or a hundred just because. I was NEVER insulted. Not once.
