There are a number of places in the south end that bake fresh banh mi bread, but I suspect that they were not willing to support friendly competition by supplying them this item. That would be my guess as to why he has to source from out of state.

It didn't address the whole-wheat issue, which is where I think the failure to communicate lies. People who order whole wheat are getting a Kroger-type roll. People who order the regular (white) get an authentic banh mi roll.

Marty seems to be using the Wednesday space lately for short review-type articles that aren't anonymous and that incorporate some review-style prose but don't include a rating, and I'm guessing may be reserved for "little" places that they don't want to do in the Saturday column.

I finally made it to the namnam cafe for lunch todays. Both Carol C and I had a chicken Banh Mi with an added side of Imperial roll. We are definitely on the pro- namnam band wagon. I haven't had a banh mi that good in twenty years! The bread is to die for; the veggies, the personification of freshness. The Imperial Roll was totally crispy, totally non-oily. We were both in food heaven. The other diners' dishes going by looked like eye-porn to me.

The price seemed more than reasonable at $7.50 plus tax and tip for each of us. We decided that we are going to have to eat our way through the whole menu (minus most of the vegetarian items, I do love my meat). Can't wait to get started.

I went for lunch earlier this week and very much enjoyed my sandwich and spring rolls....I could make a meal off of a couple of orders of the rolls, they are fab....and FRESH.....

Also, the folks there are UBER friendly........always smiling, attentive and very knowledgable......

Great little place in St. Matthews.....and I stress LITTLE.....but good things come in small packages
If life's a Banquet, what's with all the Tofu?

Cheers!

Another lunch at NamNam with Carol C. This time summer rolls and a side salad. Totally delicious. This place majors in FRESH! We vowed to continue working our way through the menu!

As Gayle said, she, another friend and I had lunch at Nam Nam today. I cannot express how wonderful it was. Those rolls, which I think are the NamNam rolls, were one of the best things I have ever tasted--fresh, fresh, fresh!!! They were light to go with today's heat but so flavorful--I'm still tasting! Never had a bad thing there as we try to eat our way through the menu!!!

I was there tonight and had the catfish in a clay pot and it was some fine eating. I honestly don't see this place replacing VK for my Vietnamese cravings - but it fills in very well for a quick and easy fix. We shall return.

I'll be checking them out next time I'm in town. It'll probably turn into a banh mi bingefest.

Which places in town, if any, serve banh mi with pâté on it? I've tried everything that Pho Binh Minh had to offer and I've had VK's banh mi only once.

Nam Nam has one with pork pate and salami. Here is a link to their web page.

DaLat's Gateaux and Cafe has banh mi with pork pate.

You can't beat their price either. $3 dollars.

It's not EXACTLY a banh mi, but the "Vietnamese Club" from Cafe Mimosa is good, and they put pâté on it - I like the beef version myself, but they do offer other meats.

I picked up dinner at NamNam last night, got a selection of items. We loved everything we had: Pork Banh Mi and house salad for me, Saigon Noodles and Buddha Roll for my husband. Everything but the Banh Mi was served in incredibly generous (i.e. leftovers are plentiful) portions. And that's no knock on the Banh Mi - I even had a little left over from that, but I'm not a huge eater. It's a nice-sized sandwich, and would make a perfect lunch.

I can see myself going back for that Banh Mi over and over again. Probably the same for my husband and what he got. The sandwich had a fantastic flavor combination, and the pork was so tasty. The bread was awesome. Everything was so, so fresh. The Buddha Roll had lots of fresh basil in it. Next, I have my eye on the Tofu Eggplant Claypot, although I wonder how a claypot dish would do via carryout.
