Robin Garr wrote:Just to play the devil's advocate here, it seems that what we're saying is, basically, addicts should be allowed to starve.

That certainly could be a consequence if they didn't see the light and change their lives like others have to. People who work places that have testing certainly feel it's better to have a job and an income instead of using drugs so maybe people receiving free money should have to make the same decision.

Ray Griffith wrote:[Since Kentucky is not one of the 15 states (+DC) that has legalized the use of medicinal marijuana, I doubt that an exception would be made. Perhaps we'll come around one day.

I guess they're would probably be better off moving to a different state or quitting marijuana is drug testing becomes a requirement.

My job is a comp time job, rather than an overtime job. My hours are all over the place, and so when you work a bunch of hours in a row, you can take some time off. Instead of getting paid time-and-a-half like overtime employees get, comp time pays you back in equal time off to use when your supervisor lets you. It's nice to use when you need it - but it's definitely not vacation, because you had to put in the hours to get the hours back.

Just another benefit of working for the government. In much of private industry people that don't get paid for overtime don't get comp time either. They are expected to work 50 plus hours per week in many cases but still only get the same salary.

I would support free healthcare, free food, free weed, and 6 weeks of vacation a year. Ohh...free craft beer too. Why don't our elected leaders give us what we want?

I only feel sorry for primary and secondary teachers when it comes to not getting compensated for hours worked. I have zero sympathy for others, especially corporate employees.

What's the difference? In both cases is a requirement of the job.

Because most corporate employees don't have to put up with five-year-olds as well as administrators, legislatures, parents, and the general public that act like five-year-olds.

No one is looking for sympathy - we all take what we get with the jobs we have.

Instead of bemoaning public sector benefits and trying to drag everyone down to the level of benefits of some of the least accommodating employers in the private sector, why are we not working to bring everyone up to a higher standard of living? This is what I do not get. Rather than lament and resent my "extra benefit" of working for the government, why not say, "that's great, and let's all move toward a more accommodating, more healthy lifestyle as a nation? Better health benefits, some more time off - wouldn't that be great?! The rising tide lifts all ships!"

Hey !!! Have you been peaking at my Facebook page ? I've been preaching this for a long-long time (almost word for word as a matter of fact).

Assuming you are (relatively) new to the "public sector" (I'm not)...All I can say is "get used to it". Every time there is a significant economic down turn politicians (particularly those of a certain ilk) and the various media outlets turn public employees (as well as Unions of all flavors) into "whipping boys" and the source of all things evil in the world...and it doesn't matter a hill of beans that 90% of the spittle they are spewing is a combination of misinformation, half truths and out right lies.

We both clearly have great minds. But I refuse to get used to it! And I doubt you will, either, at least without a fair amount of preaching, as you say. I'm about 7 years into public sector work, counting jobs in various branches. There's room for all of us to prosper and have happy lives. How socialist of me.

Good times - bad times I don't bemoan public sector employees making a fair and decent wage. But I expect my tax dollars to to used efficiently and sensibly. Elected officials of both major parties spend for political gain and that makes me sick.
