I certainly appreciate the feedback. I realize my choice to bring my (again, I'll mention professionally trained and well behaved) dog with me to restaurant patios might not be one that everyone else agrees with, but it's nice to know that I have options. Several of the pet friendly restaurants mentioned in previous posts are places that I haven't had a chance to visit, including J. Gumbo's (Ronnie, thanks for letting me know that your patios are dog friendly!), and I will certainly go out of my way to patronize them.

Sara, F.A.B.D. and Dundee Tavern also have dog friendly patios.
I am always amazed when dogs are "smuggled" into our patio, I swear they are put in purses, backpacks, bundled up in blankets, snuck in thru our back dock  only to be told by one of our employees that we cannot have any dogs other than service dogs on our property, but nevertheless it never fails :)

It's not permitted by the health dept to let any animal into the patio area. The only exception being service dogs. Health dept clearly states no birds, dogs, or fish in the dining areas. We at El Mundo don't mind pups on the sidewalk, but if they "raise a stink" they will be asked to vacate the premesis. When I was at North End Cafe, the health inspector was quite specific about pets on the patio being a no no in KY. Half the patrons were bummed out, and half were quite pleased.

Wow. How do restaurants keep squirrels, mice, birds, and other wild animals out?

And fish? Who brings a damn fish out to eat with them?

I have a golden service carp that accompanies me when I eat out.
The tall one wants white toast, dry, with nothin' on it.
And the short one wants four whole fried chickens, and a Coke.

How many fish are on your patio right now?

Nothing surprises me anymore. I work in the healthcare field and I had a woman bring a baby squirrel into the exam in her bra. And I once took a Spanish class at my church and a very eccentric woman brought a very fat, very fluffy cat in a stroller and said it was her "seizure kitty". I don't doubt there are animals that people use to predict seizures, I just doubt that's what this cat really was.

I would like for someone to please substantiate the claim that it is against the Kentucky food code to permit dogs in restaurants.
I have seen several places that have reported the health department told them they could not have dogs, however I have never seen where this is on any inspection form or requirement.
According to HACCP principles, a service animal is just as much risk for food borne illness as a pet and flies, roaches and vermin are way more likely to cause an issue.
I’m just saying, personal feelings and taboos aside that is.

With a few exceptions, the Kentucky Food Code is essentially the 2005 FDA Food Code which is included by reference. I believe you will probably find the animal prohibition in the FDA code, although I have not taken the time to review this FDA code. As with any law/code, it is open to a certain amount of interpretation by the regulatory authorities.

Well, there you go then. From now on I don't eat in any restaurant unless I am accompanied by my dead fishin' worms in a baggie. I'll set 'em right on top of the table, so I can be remembering our great times together.

On a more serious topic . . . Amici Cafe has a couple of tables on the sidewalk out front, and, when it is nice out, they sometimes crank open the floor length windows. With an outside table and inside table pulled close, people inside can sort of be at the same table with people outside - thus accomodating a group containing both Sara R and Steve P.
My memory's not as sharp as it used to be.
