Scott Rudd wrote:I too was there Sat. night. I had the dinner special of filet and my GF had the Pork Diablo. Majid stopped by a couple of times to say hello and to check on us. Dinner was fantastic. When we were finished we took what was left of our second bottle of wine and enjoyed Bobby’s sing in the lounge. As I told Majid…this is now my new favorite place. I look forward to Majid and his staff a long and successful stay in St. Matthew’s! Thank you again for a wonderful evening.

By circumstance, you found my sweet-spot. That point at which I am usually unavailable, unless called upon...

For one hour, I like to adjourn to the office for the espresso moment. This is when I talk with chef about the day. I make myself available for the staff- to work on personel issues and divy out the previous night's tip-share- to be that shoulder that they can cry upon.

We will always take this time for our people- it's a solemn promise that should be kept, I feel.

This is also my break. Wanna know what I do? I play a computer game of Risk!

I'm such a geek, like that. I just find that the mental stimulus is enjoyable- that it keeps my mind working (and in a different way.) I always come out of the office a stronger person than I went in. The turns happen quite slowly and the computer 'dings' when it's my turn, so I can multitask even this 'break.'

Back on point...

I still do the most important of work during this period. Like the famous Joe Montana commercial, We will always take care of the hands that take care of us.

Sorry to have missed you, yet I hope you'll understand the timing!

Anyone there last night at the bar? Two guys in business suits got into a shouting match, dropping the "f" word & threatening each other with fists. "Outside buddy, right now". Both were quite drunk & out of line. The owner stepped in & handled to situation perfectly. That drama was much more exciting than the KY basketball game.

I am curious how he handled the situation. Majid is such a pro. One could learn a lot by his people and managing skills.

Majid's is definitely not my crowd by about 10-20 years (I'm 25), but Majid has created himself quite the restaurant. The space itself is beautiful with a rectangular bar in the lounge where you can order off of the lounge or dinner menu. I ordered the smoked salmon crostini, mast o laboo, kashke bademjon, stuffed quail, ash-e reshteh, kamb pops, and rack of lamb (sheeshleek).
The food was all well prepared and seasoned exceptionally. It felt awkward eating the lamb pops, stuffed quail, and mast o laboo with my hands (which I felt was the only way to eat them) in what seemed like a fine dining restaurant, but they were all delicious, especially the lamb pops, the stuffed quail, and my safety order the salmon crostini.
Overall the food was very good, even though it seemed to lack the plating of such fine dining restaurants as The Oakroom, but it didn't suffer from it's lack thereof.
Had I known, the lamb pops were the same as the lamb served as the rack lamb, I wouldn't have ordered them, but I was more than happy to get 8 more lamb chops.
Majid himself stopped by a few times to see how things were, but he kept his conversations brief (15 seconds or less), and they were great and not overbearing.
Stephen and his staff was very accommodating behind the bar and he presented me with a few cocktails that were not on the menu; that were fantastic to say the least. I think it's a great addition to the area and I will happily recommend it.

You know, I'm really curious about this statement. While I can understand not feeling comfortable in a bar where the patrons and music cater to a different age group, why would this matter to you in a restaurant? Is the food of your generation particularly different?

I think Groucho Marx (who would be really old if he were still alive) said it best: I don't want to belong to any club that will accept me as a member.

I dunno Steve...Not commenting specifically about the "vibe" at Majid's, I kinda see where he's coming from. I mean putting the shoe on the other foot, I won't say I universally avoid places that cater to that all important 18-34 demographic but I certainly don't seek them out. So yeah, I could see where someone might feel the way Ryan does.

I think Groucho Marx (who would be really old if he were still alive) said it best: I don't want to belong to any club that will accept me as a member.

Yes, I do think that the foodies (for a lack of a better term) of my generation embrace a different style of cuisine. I would place Majid's in a similar boat entree wise with Z's fusion (when I used to work there a while ago), Vincenzo's, and a few other restaurants that I assume combine their food all in the same way (so I won't list them as I'm just assuming from their menus). And that is following a formula of meat, starch, veg (vegetable of the day kills me, you can't just pair any old vegetable with any protein or starch). Now, I'm not knocking that formula by any means because people sure do seem to enjoy it, but I feel like my generation has embraced food that doesn't have to follow that formula.

If you look at the cuisine that Bobby Benjamin is doing at The Oakroom (though that's a seriously stuffy joint), what Jayson is doing at 732 Social, Michael Paley at Proof on Main, Brian Morgan at Eiderdown, and the gentlemen at Hammerheads, they don't follow that standard formula and in many cases even debunk it.

Now, I don't want this post to take anything away from the quality of food I was served, it was all very good and appropriately seasoned (which is 3/4th's the battle), but I don't think it is the style of cuisine that gets my generation excited.

And when I say my generation I mean the ones that care about food, not the ones who would be just as happy at mcdonalds. They're a whole other subset.

Ryan,

We stopped in for a couple of cocktails last night and after taking a close look around I now see what you were talking about. The AARP level in the room was definitely up there. Hell, I'm 54 years old and I felt like one of the youngest bucks in there. :D

While I've enjoyed Majid's the couple of times I've been in there, it certainly seems like older, well to do folks from Indian Hills and Mockingbird Valley are the people in the greatest numbers.

There's nothing wrong with that, as that was the majority of the crowd that hung there when it was Rick's too. If Majid has unlocked the secret formula that will keep this segment of the population with a lot of disposable cash flocking to the place, then more power to him! :D

We enjoyed our dinner @ Majid's on Friday night. Mast O Laboo, Calamari, Seafood Stew and Salmon were thoughtfully prepared and they were all just wonderful.

Majid introduced himself and he is indeed a pro. I commented how I loved his pistachio soup from his Saffron's days and he said that he intends to put it on Majid's menu.

The atmosphere in the dining area was very lively, but not loud. BTW; I'm 43, she's 45

The service left much to be desired as our server was not very attentive. However, at this point I have no reason to believe that bad service is the norm.

Anyway, we'll definitely be back.

No food review, have not eaten there yet just drinks.
One complaint, the door from the "restaurant" to the "lounge" swings two ways, and folks would push the door open from the restaurant side causing whomever is near the door standing at the bar (me) to move each time. If only we can get them to pull the door, better yet... I say eliminate the door completely.
