Re: $3.00 for a glass of coke.... oh my

by Derrick Dones » Tue Jan 18, 2011 3:33 pm

This is not an attack on anyone...

Seriously, there are people who don't drink water at all? Number one, that is definitley not healthy...I'd be suprised if your doctor hasn't advised that this could lead to serious medical issues in the future. I guess I just can't imagine not liking, or at the very least not being able to tolerate water. I can understand (allthough IMO it is crazy) being adversed to stinky blue cheese, lengua, lima beans, or tomato juice. These things have strong flavor profiles and atypical textures, but water??? You can barely taste the stuff...it is cold (or hot) and wet! Could it be that this aversion is purely in one's mind?

I agree with AnneMarie, that $3.00 is very very steep for a coke. That's why when I go out, I stick with ice water and beer.

Just curious Annemarie, at what price point would you give up cokes (and tea etc. for that matter) and force yourself to have a water? Kinda' like the idea that if you charge a higher amount for cigarettes, some people will stop buyig them.

I also agree that Mark has a good point...why such a drastic mark-up for profit on cokes? Why not spread the make-up more equally across the board. I would think this would minimize debates like this?

Without meaning to attack anyone, either, I was wondering about that too. Hydration is really important for both health and comfort, and - although I'm not a doctor - I don't think most medical advisers would recommend substituting soft drinks (or coffee, tea or beer) for one's daily ration of H2O.

I'm no expert, but my sense is that most consumers (including me) often decide how "expensive" a restaurant is by entree prices. Once we're there, we may end up paying a higher margin on drinks, desserts, and apps. I've found that dining out is usually quite reasonable if we stick to entrees and water.

It's almost like entrees are the loss leaders. Correct me if I'm wrong, biz people.

The best way to combat a price increase is by not purchasing that particular product. Suppliers will keep searching for an equilibrium where a price increase does not actually decrease profit. So to answer your question, it will only stop when people stop buying product at a given price point. If an increase from say 2.50 to 3.00 increases profit, then these types of things will continue.

Markup % is always greater on low cost items vs. high cost items.

Mark up a $.50 soda 300% and you get a $1.50 selling point.
Mark up a $.50 soda 600% and you get a $3.00 selling point.
Mark up a $10 steak 300% and you get a $30.00 selling point.
Mark up a $10 steak 600% and you get a $60.00 selling point.

A $1.50 or $3.00 soda is not going to keep me from dining at X restaurant, but a $30 or $60 steak might.
If restaurants, or most companies marked up everything by the same percentage they would be out of business in a hurry.

$3.00 is a little steep for a soda, but and extra $1.50 or $3.00 on a check is not that big of a deal.

No! If you paid closer attention to what goes on in these fora, you'd know that only craft beers from local artisan brewers may be counted as an approved water substitute.

Now Winger. That's not quite the truth. If one lives in Euphoria or Liberal Lakes or there aboust, then yes what you are saying is true (I always say...the fruitier the beer the...well never mind). Out here in Garage Logic (County Seat for Gumption County) REAL men don't drink things we can't pronounce. We applaud the use of Bud, Rolling Rock and a veritable smorgasbord of other American Fizzy Waters in lieu of that stuff that comes from the faucet in your kitchen. We DO however draw the line somewhat north of Lite Beer from Miller.

See...it just goes to show you. My theory is correct. Given enough time every thread on this Forum will eventually morph from the original subject to the subject/s of beer, pizza, bratty kids or crappy service.,,or as you pointed out in another thread...The Dreaded Chain Restaurant. :P

You have your analogy wrong; only craft beers from local artisan brewers may be counted as an approved FOOD substitute.

I fixed it for you.
