If you're truly interested in my dining experience there i'm happy to relate it.

My last visit i had the cowboy steak, which is a ribeye. It was delicious, but not worth $50 bucks. Tasted great but to me, for fifty dollars, the steak should melt in your mouth, and this one didn't. I will stick with the filets next time. I paired that with the lobster mac which is also delicious but overpriced. Although in fairness, it did have a good deal of lobster in it.

I just had beer so I can't comment on the wine service.

Let's be honest the food is damn good, but the reason most people eat there is to see and be seen. Any night i have been I'm usually surrounded by wealthy (or trying to appear wealthy) gentlemen accompanied by women in short skirts with lots of fake breasts. I think the restaurant itself is pretty cool and the live music is nice, and i've always had good service there. If i had millions of dollars in the bank I would probably eat there more often....but I'm a steak and potatoes guy. Someone with a more diverse palate can probably find much more interesting and cheaper food options.

So there you go.

I can't think of any circumstance in which questioning a diner about a tip would be acceptable. Your friend should call Jeff Ruby's and speak with the manager.

My husband takes many clients there and to the other ones in Cinci. Guys love it. I've had 2 experiences with the one downtown. First, we had a family get together with some couisins and elderly aunts and uncles. They gave us a semi private room. They escorted the ladies to the rest room and provided the best possible service. They helped them out the door and with their wraps.

A few weeks ago, my husband and a client made an Open Table reservation. When they got there, they chose a seat near the music. Open Table claimed a no show. I contacted the manager about this and he was extremely nice and helpful, explaining that only dining room diners received opentable credits. I told him I thought that if that was their policy, they should inform people of that rule before they sit down. He listened to me and agreed that it should be addressed. Very nice, very professional.

I am not doubting Heather's story at all, but knowing how Mr Ruby feels about service and professionalism, I bet the manager would love to know about this incident.

We had an eerily similar experience to Heather Y's about 15 years ago at Les Relais. Our party of three had tipped an appropriate amount, but the server actually followed us out into the parking lot and asked if there had been a problem with the service. He also said "I thought we had a good time" to make things just a tad more creepy. We were so freaked out that we handed him more money (we were young and didn't handle the situation as we would have today). We always tip well and I've never had anything like that happen before or since.

I remember our server vividly from 15 years ago and still see him from time to time walking down Bardstown Road or waiting near a bus stop. (He doesn't recognize me) He appears to still be employed as a server because he is often wearing the black pants/white shirt server uniform. Long story, short....I wonder if the server in Heather's story is the same weirdo that we had fifteen years ago. Male, white, early 50's, grey hair.

That would just guarantee a phone call to the manager, and me NEVER returning to that restaurant. Inappropriate on SO many levels!

I'm confidant I know this person. Never had an issue or even heard of one like that....but anymore nothing surprises me. Creepy is an understatement.

Now, I know we local industry folks should feel obligated to post here more often, and I'm guilty of not participating - but I, as a local restaurant owner, and contributor to the local community would be appreciative of this forum to kill this thread - right here and right now. I am not one for excuses, no one should be, but I am human as I'm sure Heather, Jason, etc are. Our brothers and sisters at Jeff Rubys experienced a tragic personal loss this past week; one of such gravity, that it would be inhuman of us not to think it has effected each member of their staff in very personal ways. Being able to vouch for years of amazing contribution to our community, in the event this very uncharacteristic experience occurred, and being privy to the climate of the restaurant currently, they have certainly earned a pass in my book. I would suggest for anyone who currently wishes to pursue a solution to Heathers experience to contact the general manager of the establishment and allow him to correct it for you. I'm more than confident in his, as well as the staffs ability to consistently create an amazing dining experience for you. But, rubbing salt in a open wound - is not how I see the people of this forum behaving on a regular basis.

What? What wound? It's a discussion. That's all. If's there's some big, deep dark secret tragic event that everyone at Jeff Ruby's is going through, I didn't know. Sorry. But do we have to kill the discussion because of it? Are we not allowed to discuss a dining issue?

After attempting to read most of these post in this thread , I have come to the following conclusion:

1) The Server's actions were inappropriate.
2) One Server's actions is not indicative of an entire restaurant. Or should it be used by persons never having been to the establishment to dine.
3) Management would surely help out in this situation.
4) If Management does not help out , then it's an entirely new discussion.
5) I've never been to Jeff Rubys , but will not hesitate because of this one instance.

Chris, I don't do that kind of censorship, but count on the good sense of the gang here to bring these things back around sooner or later. Really I think it's happening already! 8)

I agree. I'll be glad to listen to what Jayson has to say, in public or in private, but as I just said to Chris in the previous similar post, it seems to me that this community in its native good sense is already coming around to the point where there's some value in this discussion. It is what it is, and if the server had an emotional reason that mitigates his reported conduct - as many of us wondered about from the start - we'll be happy to take it into consideration, if we know what it is.

But "kill this thread"? I honestly don't see the rationale behind that.

not to belittle anyone's tragedy, but it seems as though JR's went on with "business as usual" in light of such an event. I see no reason to kill this thread. G-d help me.
