I stopped in for a cheese steak yesterday. I like the new spot. I have to say its a bit different, but in a good way. I do not often spend a lot of time in AMVETS halls or VFW's but it is pretty much what I imagined. Theres a bar, pool table a couple of other games in a back room. In addition to about twelve tables , there is another table set up with white table cloth, candle, china, and a flower for the POW that never made it home. I thought it was cool to do that, and apparently they have a similar table at every AMVETS. The walls have a lot of pics of vets through the years as well as pics of various military equipment. I sat at the bar with a few old timers while the bartender(Joe?) filled me in on who the AMVETS are and what they do. In addition to the vets (they always have great stories,if you give them the time to tell you) I saw a couple of tables near the fireplace occupied by younger folks. It seemed pretty obvious who was coming through the door for Danny Macs and who coming in to spin a yarn at the bar. I say its good match for both parties. The old guys seemed to enjoy having "young blood" hanging out.
Danny gave me the bad news that the bread truck had not arrived yet( I was there early) and would not be able to make my cheese steak. I sat at the bar drinking a 2 dollar Guinness and thought about getting a pizza instead when he told me he could make a cheese steak calzone. He admitted it would be an experiment and wasnt sure how it would come out. I had cheese steak on the brain so I said sure lets try it. While it was different it had all the components that make the Danny Macs cheese steak delicious, beef thats perfectly cooked, ample supply of onions and peppers and the right amount of cheese. I have to admit I missed the chewy roll they normally come on, but after dipping my calzone in beef au jus I had no complaints. For me,it makes even more sense to go out of my way for Danny Macs now,get great food, support a good independent in this town and support the AMVETS too. WIN Win Win.
The tall one wants white toast, dry, with nothin' on it.
And the short one wants four whole fried chickens, and a Coke.
