Thanks for that Megan. I feel the same but I have a few years on you- I feel much younger now!
My real struggle was in Spain last month- the vast majority of restaurants don't OPEN until 9:00 pm for dinner- things really get started around midnight....

Nope...sorry, not buying into that as a reason to stay open until 4 a.m.

I grew up in a "factory town" where everyone I knew worked shift work. I personally spent 25 years as an air traffic controller in several different cities and worked "shift work" every single day of my career. Not one city I've ever lived in had "last call" past 2:15 a.m. In Minneapolis/St Paul (which I dare say has a more "nightlife" than L'ville) last call was at 1:15 a.m. with drinks off the bar by 1:30a.m. In every city I've ever lived there was always -plenty- of time to "hit the bars" no matter what shift you worked. To those people "in the business" who would claim to be the exception to that rule, I would respond that well...you chose your career path.

I'm relatively new in town and thus am not familiar with the history behind such late closing hours but looking at it from a number of angles I will speculate they probably cause more harm than good.

Yeah because we shouldnt progress at all and not make people even more miserable who sometimes have no option but to work 3rd or 2nd shift. We're moving toward a 24 hour world get used to it.

PS - I dont even drink and really could care less if drinking was allowed ever.

Louisville is one of the latest around, but not out of line with the rest of the country. It makes to difference to me if a bar closes at 1:00 a.m. or stays open 24/7. People working the 9-5 shift usually stop by the bar for a few drink and dinner and are home by 8 or 9. This timeline falls right in line with those people getting off work at 11 or 12, then going out for a few drinks and a bite to eat until 3 or 4.

Alabama:Birmingham and Mobile 24/7/365
Alaska: 5 a.m
Hawaii: 4 a.m
Indianapolis: 3 a.m.
New York: 4a.m.
Miami: 5 a.m.

 Mike, we've been in a "24 Hour World" at lot longer than you or I have been around...and I don't know that I would lump extended bar hours under the banner of "progress"

I always found it more helpful to hit the bars before work.

Anything that stays open 24 hours I mark as progress. I cant tell you how much I hated life when the only job I could get was 2nd shift. All I could do was work and sleep because aside from Denny's nothing was open in Louisville in 1996 after about 10 PM (Aside from the aformentioned bars but I was also 19 at the time).

Fine. I don't accept the fact simply because you lived in a factory town as a valid reason to dislike serving alcohol till 4am. I worked till 2 am on occasion and was glad to have some place to unwind after work. Even though I am no longer in the business, I still feel it's very important for people to have this option. You may not like it, but other people enjoy it. And they don't have to substantiate the need for being out so late. Nor do they have to feel guilty about being "in the business".

Steve you are the same age I am but your memory must be worse. I remember when I was young in Rochester New York last call was at 2:00 AM after the bars closed in Rochester on a good party night we would then drive to Buffalo where last call was 4:00 AM! I probably wouldn't do it now but back then it was just something we did. I certainly would have liked to live someplace with a 4:00 AM last call.

Not to derail the thread from its... derailment into whether or not people should drink at 4 AM, but what this town needs is a good nightlife/bar/club association that can advocate/legally represent on behalf of business owners like Denny, that can lobby politicians to make sure that some of the zoning issues/ABC abuses that have been happening around Germantown don't happen, and that can help budding entrepreneurs who want to start new nightlife businesses. Many other cities have such organizations, akin to similar ones for restaurants, but I don't know of one in Louisville (and if there is one, clearly it's pretty ineffective). Local businesses need to do a better job of banding together, especially in this continuingly-difficult recession.
