bill,
speechless good, or speechless bad???? i would never, ever, discourage anyone from giving to dare to care... part of the reason it is such a highly rated organization is that it 'vets' fundraisers before someone uses it's name....
the real reward is serving a hungry kid a great, nutritious dinner, or sending them home with a back pack that is, full of nutritious food, for the weekend.

I should clarify - I'm in for the potluck, not the documentary.

***edit*** No one will understand the reason I referenced a documentary unless Stephan D. replaces his deleted message. Otherwise, see y'all next month. And thank heaven's I got lost last year so I should know how to get there this year.

Andrew Hutto wrote:why don't we change the venue of this event from cardinal harbor, to one of the kids cafes that d.t.c. serves 3-4 dinners at each week? bring your pot luck to the shawnee kids cafe, neighborhood house in portland, americana apartments or the presbyterian community center on shelby in smoketown.
serve those kids, then pat yourselves on the back for raising $350.00.

Andrew-
This is what prompted my "speechless" comment. it came across to me as a kick in the ass to a few folks who are trying to help, perhaps in some small way, those in need. Care to clarify/expand?

hey bill, i love people who want to help.... in any way they can. i just took a small bit of offense at the implication ( sorry that i am hyper-sensitive) at the implication (not by you) that someone has not returned a phone call.
i just think that the day spent at d.t.c. or at a kids cafe is an absolutely life changing experience ( hopeful liberal) for a lot of people...
i have the utmost respect for every person who works at dare to care. they are the most awesome crew.
every person who walks through their door is treated.... beautifully...
off of my soapbox....

Thanks for clarifying, Andrew. I know from talking to you that your were really not being negative, just passionate. A bit of history - this is the 3rd year we are doing a potluck. #1 was a book drive for a member who was a first year teacher, last year we decided to help Kentucky Harvest. I do not remember the totals, but I know we brought some canned goods and cash to the effort. I do not believe Steve was disparaging the organization, just trying to do some planning, since he is the one who stepped up this year to organize. I think it speaks well of our small "community" that we choose to make our get togethers to also benefit the community at large.

Classic!

I was sitting on Jackie's couch and we were talking about the forum when I referenced my post here and how I'd edited it.

I had a fun idea about writing up a piece about dare to care and wrote about it here. I then thought about it and decided 'nah.' I wouldn't help anything with a piece on BB. So, I changed my post. Sort of a crumpling up of the paper and throwing the idea away sorta thing...

You should have seen the look on her face when she realized that she had referenced a post that was no longer there! The eyes got wide, the blood ran from her face, her body language dropped and she hurredly picked up her phone to get her edit in as quick as possible!

You could hear me laughing from across the street as I playfully acted like I was gonna steal her phone from her.

In my mind's eye, I had us performing a comedic skit. Jackie plays the role of the passenger in my car, traveling down the highway. I play the role of the talkative, yet narcoleptic driver...

'Blah. Blah. Blah...'

THUMP!

hey all,
apparently i offended several people with my comments... i offer my apologies...please accept them. i
never try to rain on anyone's parade. my offer to take people out to dare to care is on the table 52 weeks a year.... tuesday through friday. sorry to be selfish, but monday is my golf day.
my basic point should have come across more as " come out, see what we do" . people would be blown away if they saw the operation. you give $10.00, $9.50 goes right back to feeding people in need, in our community. the need increases by 10% every year... a shameful figure for he united states.
d.t.c. was founded because a kid in louisville, ky. died of starvation 35 years ago...

I think it's a great idea! I am honored when I get asked to go to the DTCFB spots and assist with the meals-my daughter Ava usually goes with so she can truly see how lucky she is and too never take anything for granted. Thanks Andrew for all you do for DTCFB and your passion!! AND, how awesome the Forum has picked DTCFB to benefit from the Pot Luck!!!

The kids cafes are awesome

My daughter needed service hours for her confirmation, so I took her & some classmates to the kids cafe off of taylor blvd. what a big suprise for these (my) kids - reality check big time! anyway, on our 1st visit, the kids didn't talk to each other too much, but on the second, they were all happy to see each other again - talking about school, music, etc. just like old friends - it was nice

My daughter and I continued to stop in and say hello for a while - the little kids loved seeing us, we sometimes came bearing gifts - games, books, candy canes to hang on the christmas tree - whatever.
What she did learn was that instead of trading off clothes/shoes/coats between friends when she/they out-grow or get tired of them, she now wants me to take them to that cafe for anyone that might need them - and there is always someone.

the hardest part was when we couldn't go due to club volleyball practices and games taking up our time (life!) We'll start going again next week hopefully, with jcps v-ball over.

Just go serve at one of the cafes sometime - it'll make you want to do more, and it should...

I agree.. We have volunteered at the Kid's Cafe also and it is an eye opening experience for our children... The volunteers who prepare the meals are wonderful...

There hasn't been much action here so I thought that in addition to bringing all of the chafing dishes, I was going to prepare a big ole' pan of Hot Brown Casserole and Colleen will be making some sort of dessert. :D I hope to see you all there!!!!
