About your question as to why, the only places I have worked that have done any kind of business on the 4th are country club swimming pool snack bars. Our decision to close was purely to offset the expenses of utilities and labor versus no revenue, coupled with the added perk of creating a three day vacation. No need to inject politics where it isn't warranted.

As a consumer, I wish that restaurants were open on July 4, Memorial Day, Labor Day, etc. It seems like, since most office workers are off work, restaurants and stores would be open. However, I have come to realize that, if I want to eat out on these kind of holidays, I have to eat at a chain, because most local restaurants aren't open.

That said, I think it depends on the location of your restaurant as to whether or not you will have business. For example, I can understand Meridian Cafe and Cafe Emilie being closed, because St. Matthews was absolutely dead today. However, when we went to lunch at City Cafe Baxter (which, fortunately, usually is open on these holidays-thanks Bernie), it was absolutely packed. I have never seen as many people there as I did today. Of course, a lot of those people were probably eating there and then going to the movies. But it does show that people do eat in restaurants, at least for lunch, on traditional "grilling" days.

We typically close on Easter, Christmas, and Thanksgiving. The other Holidays we pay attention to staff requests and our business leading up to the holiday, as well as what day of the week the holiday is on. The past 2 years we have closed for the 4th of July. Next year the 4th falls on a Friday -- and I'll probably stay open.
