Well out here in the sticks they use alot of cinders(incinerators/power plant waste) on the road. They work great for traction and the black color absorbs heat to increase melting ability. While it may not be as effective as salt its alot cheaper from what I understand. The state does come by and salt certain bad sections of road as well as using brine on he bigger roads. The only problem with the cinders is they turn everything black until it rains.
The tall one wants white toast, dry, with nothin' on it.
And the short one wants four whole fried chickens, and a Coke.

Back in Minnie-snow-tah they use either salt, brine or heated sand...depending on the conditions. The conditions that we experienced earlier this week would have called for heated sand applied in a timely manner...no doubt in my mind doing so would have cut the number of accidents in half. The only negative to sand is that it must be cleaned up in the spring, lest it clog the storm sewers. On the positive side it can be recycled.

Another thing that folks from colder climates do that REALLY helps is to delay or stagger times people report for work. It is VERY common for employers to use a "calling tree" (or report via the media) that start times are delayed 1,2 or 3 hours. Folks still end up doing their full 8 hours but it definitely eases the morning and evening rush hours during inclement weather.

Say you've got a business that employs 50 people...You push their starting times back an hour or two and usually they can miss the worst of the madhouse.

Haven't checked out the link yet but of all the places I've lived I'd put L'ville drivers toward the top of my list of good drivers...in anything except snow (and that's not meant as a slam). I don't drive a lot in rush hour but the times that I am on the road people seem to be pretty considerate and you don't see a lot of total idiots on the road. Ya'll want to see some goofy drivers, try Oklahoma City. Turn signals are way optional and I've never seen a place that comes close when it comes to people running red lights...and don't get me started about those idiots during inclement weather.
