That's what I'm getting. I've had steak at Palermo and was far from impressed, never been to Del Frisco's. Looks like it is going to be Del Frisco's for V-day.

Ask for Steve V.'s section when making your reservation. A real service professional!

I respect that. I would only add, and I'm sure you and everyone else are aware, that the type of style of "steak" you're getting at Palermo vs. steakhouse is a totally different animal (not literally, of course).

Though it fits, and I mentioned it early on, to be honest I don't really consider that I'm eating a "steak" at Palermo. I consider that I'm eating an Argentine grilled meat that is beef, as steak is also beef.

Just my take.

There are so many positives reviews for Palermo, I'm going back. Just sharing my one experience.

I have a few friends that just aren't fans, and they're open-minded etc. etc. eaters. I've forced them back a few times, and their opinion doesn't change. It's not a service or decor issue; they just don't like the food, despite my recommendations of what to get. If you don't like it, you don't like it. Hopefully your second experience is better, though.

What a great thread. I actually had an idea last night at work to start a thread asking this same question.

I thought I'd add that the best steaks I've ever had have been prepared by me or a friend, at home. I always cook mine 30 seconds per side on high on the stovetop in a cast iron skillet heated in a 500+ degree oven, and 2-3 minutes a side inside the oven. If I use a grill I get it as hot as possible and cook about 3 minutes a side. Believe it or not one of the best steaks I've ever had I cooked on a George Foreman Grill.

I have to agree. I make a mean-as-hell steak au poivre - served it to my wife for our second date, and look where that got me! Also a mean port-based pan sauce.

One of the best "steaks" I've ever made was using Alton Brown's salt crusted whole beef tenderloin recipe. It was a bitch to make, but turned out perfectly cooked without a drop of moisture loss, or so it seemed.

Of course, it's harder for a home cook to get their hands on dry aged, etc. product, but cooked properly, a home cook can do a mean job on a steak. This is why I rarely order steak in any restaurant, unless it's a steak house or somewhere like Palermo. I'd rather see what the professional chefs can do with other types of protein, or at least what they can do with beef other than searing/grilling it.

Reservation is made in Steve V's section. Is the Chateaubriand for 2 a no brainer or should I consider something else?

Justin: I don't think you will be disappointed with the Chateaubriand but definetly get the Green Phunque! It will change your mind about spinach.

Brad: My wife and I are in the strange position of not enjoying Palermo either. We wanted to like it but after three visits we were underwhelmed. The food was good but not our cup of tea. Same with Pat's. Never found a cut of steak that was better than what I could make at home. I respect all the people that like either, again just a matter of taste.

With grilled sweetbreads at Palermo, why even bother with steak.

We went to Ruth's Chris for a work/Christmas dinner.I was totally underwhelmed with my steak. IMHO this place is overrated.
My wife and I ate at our fav place the other night, Jack Fry's. It's not a steak place, but I gotta say, the filet was awesome.

Am I the only person on the planet who doesn't like filets? I'll eat a filet if someone else bought it and cooked it and I'll eat the occasional tenderloin at a brunch or wedding, but I NEVER order one at a restaurant. Good ground beef has better flavor than a filet IMO.
