I talked with both Nancy and Chef Gary last Thursday, and she just didn't want to let the news out before she'd had a chance to notify all of her employees, which I totally respect. She's already got several interested tenants for the Cafe Metro property, which is good news, and the Uptown is still doing great business, which is equally good news. Some clever restaurant owner should hire Chef Gary Byler, Jr., quick, before I try to lure him in to Sullivan's Baking & Pastry program!

Nancy is a class act and always has been. I will never forget my first meal there as a teenager. It was a revelation. Long live the Uptown.

Seems you should be mad at the musicians for playing for tips and not the restaurant. No one put a gun to their head. Plus you said you "heard" Are you sure?

That is EXACTLY what the hell I was thinking. Sounds like "I want I want I want, and I want others to want what I want". And this is spoken from (me) a lover of musicians, so don't even think about it. And to stand on behalf of Cafe Metro, and in opposition to opposers, don't talk shit about a deceased relative. Bad f-ing karma. Amy Hoover said it the best. I'm disappointed with this malarchy.

Seems to be the "bad Karma" happened by not paying the guys to play there. I bet the guy that cleaned the crapper there got paid but not the musicians? B.S.
By the way, we all play for the love of it, but we deserve to get paid if we love it enough to do it well.

I'm going to have to disagree.

If music was nothing more than your passion and not profession, then you'd not care about be being paid one red cent.

Speaking as a musician ... it is the musician's responsibility to discuss wages prior to the gig. If, after playing, the establishment chooses not to honor the agreement, then move on to the next gig. If the individual chooses to continue playing for said establishment, then they really have nothing to complain about. And professionals don't bad-mouth any employer, regardless of how much of a behind they might be. You never know when a potential employer will hear of it and choose not to hire you because of it.

Now, I'm off to play a gig ...

Agree with Kyle - too many artists, whether musical, visual or culinary, fail to recognize their own worth. If you don't charge for your work, you're going to be devalued and disappointed by what others offer - or more likely don't offer - to pay you.

Regardless of issues, Louisville lost a wonderful restaurant! Hats off to Nancy!

Saw a small sign this week on the window of the former Metro, that said "sushi & fusion coming soon"...

It actually says "Wild Ginger Sushi & Fusion" - I assume no connection with the popular Wind Ginger in Seattle, which I believe is Thai. Whatever, I'm eager to see it! I hope you won't have to be friends with the owner to get treated right. ;)

I was thinking the same thing when I drove by and saw the sign.
How many Asian fusion-sushi places can we have on Bardstown Rd.?
It's almost like the number of pizza places

Funny! You guys are rewriting the lead of my LEO/HotBytes column for Wednesday! :D

I make a similar observation to intro my report on Wasabiya: We need to change the nickname of Bardstown/Baxter from "Restaurant Row" to "The Boulevard of Bistros and Sushi Bars."

(By the way, the CJ went to the same place today, but I think Marty's excitement over their creative sushi designs prompted him to overlook the little problem that they're not real good about keeping the fish as fresh as some might prefer ... )
