Uh, hello? Did you think we were in an argument, Steve? I was adding a data point to the open conversation.

That's why I asked, instead of assuming we were having an argument.

Well, as a fairly active undergraduate in the University of Louisville, I heard absolutely nothing about this event at U of L. Normally I at least hear once about just about everything that's happening on campus. I'm a part of so many Facebook groups and email lists that every event has a chance to reel me in.

But like I said, I'd heard nothing, so I'll blame it on the complete lack of advertisement on campus. Who was sponsoring the lecture, anyway?

Jerry C,

Please stop throwing around insults. When you insult my respected friends, you are insulting me as well.

You obviously have an agenda, which closely matches that of several right-wing talk radio and tv hosts. Spare us your insults.

I see you've made disparaging comments about my business choices in the past, such as "Hmmm...no bacon or sausage = no business...LOL"...Believe it or not Mr. C, but not everyone in the world is just like you!

Maybe your neighborhood tap is a racist and bigoted place, express your views on religion there and please keep it out of here.

Such a touchey subject for a food forum, to be sure. John, I read Bryan's statements as simply saying that in the specific event of 9/11, the hijackers used Islam as a justification for their actions. Al Qaeda uses Islam as a justification for its actions.

I see your point, but I still think thats a bit like saying David Koresh used the teachings Christianity as a justification for his actions. I think it would been more appropriate to say something to the extent....a fringe element often will use a misinterpreted view of Islam as a justification for said actions. I dont think the Muslim religion teaches anybody to fly a plane into a building and kill innocent people.
But whatever... Ive been know to misinterpret things here rather often .

Sorry Nimbus, but I cannot arrive at that far reaching conclusion that an insult to your "respected friend" is an insult to you. Take it for what it is...a comment about an absurd statement made by Ms.Sheehan, that has no impact on you or your beliefs (surely you are not suggesting that you too would prefer to live under Chavez).

The other terribly disparaging remark you refer to was made with an ""lol"...you do know what that means?

I made no comments about wanting everyone to be like me, so lighten up and smell some of your coffee.

Yes Jerry, when you throw around insults at my friends I take offense. I care about my friends, and I stand up for them. Maybe you let your friends get insulted and say nothing. Not me. I don't like to see them bad-mouthed. I will not tolerate it either. This is supposed to be a civil forum. Leave your insults at the door. I am friends with Cindy, and have worked with her on important national issues over the years. Working for Peace isn't always glamorous, and it sure doesn't pay well, but I'm glad that people do it.

As for Chavez, that is opening a whole other can of worms. It is nice that he is intelligent, I like that in a leader of a country. He reads books avidly, and seeks to learn from history. He writes his own speeches. He increases spending on social programs (health, education, food, etc) while at the same time increasing the amount of money the country gets from foreign corporations (which are essentially leaching profits from his country's natural resources). He is doing a lot of things that make a lot of sense and that benefit the common people of the country. Yes, I like that! The wealthy ruling class (both in Venezuela and the US) of course doesn't like people like that. They want status quo and massive disparities in wealth (so they can stay rich). The history of Venezuela and much of Latin America is long and complex. This is not the place for that discussion. I'd be happy to discuss it with you offline if you wish.

I know the right wing calls Obama a socialist, but he truly is a mainstream Democrat, which is really a subset of the Business party. Most leftists in the US would love to have a true Socialist runnning our country!

Cheers!

p.s. I didn't mean to stir up a political discussion here. I was just presenting another day in the life of Nimbus (which happened to include some pizza and takes place at an F&B establishment).

p.p.s On the walls of my shop you'll find pictures of such radicals as Cindy Sheehan, The Dalai Lama, Muhammad Ali, Jesus Christ, Malcolm X and yes Hugo Chavez.

A decent dissertation, but I did not see you saying you would prefer to live under Chavez than what you have in the good old U.S.A.

All I did was call Ms. Sheehan out when she said she would prefer that. I actually thought the "funny farm" was a decent and appropriate way of putting it, but I am sorry to have offended you.

Over the years, many who were disappointed with perceived imperfections of capitialism and the American political system have often been attracted to the romanticized ideological landscape of socialism and its imagery of a society governed by intelligent, enlightened leaders who share the nation's bounty equitably among all....reality has painted a different picture, as portrayed by the consistent history of abysmal human rights protections and suppression of free speech among socialist countries...America has its shortcomings, but at least we live in a country where those problems and imperfections can be openly discussed and debated (e.g., this forum)...I would submit that most Socialist-governed nations aren't quite as tolerant...

...now, let's return to discussing food.

It seems this statement (the Chavez part, of course) is going to do much for your political aspirations.

Jerry, you're overlooking our forum commitment to a civil tone. You can argue all you want about why you feel that your words are not insulting, but in some of these posts you come across in a tone that might remind some people of their ex-wives and why they're ex. It's not hard to see sarcasm between the lines when you're arguing. I don't want it here.

Careful there Robin, you might get all the ladies coming down on you. Maybe you should have also included an ex-husband analogy. lol.

For the life of me, I cannot see anything uncivil regarding the posts. I was asked several times to provide support for my comments, and did so without saying anything uncivil to any forum member.

Jerry, maybe my sarcasm meter was set to high, but "lol" in the context of laughing at your conversation partner, questions like "do you know what that means" and telling people to "lighten up" all total up to me - when I see them all in one post - as communicating a tone that's closer to nasty than cordial.

Look ... I'm not offering to ban you or even telling you to shut up. Just reminding you - and in this public forum, preaching to the choir - that it's okay for us to debate, but best if we can bend over backward to keep those debates civil. Think of the forum as a friendly bar, where the conversations are fun. We don't need a lot of bouncers around, but as virtual bartender of the virtual pub, I'm inclined to step in when I think I see potential for a quarrel and hope to gently stop it before it starts.

As for the ex-wife comment, I'm a straight guy myself, so I speak only of realms in which I can comment with knowledge. I'll leave it to someone more qualified to explain about ex-husbands. ;)

(By the way, I'm not going to knee-jerk about Chavez without knowing a lot more about him. Too much of what we know about him comes via corporate media. I know a little too much about South America and some of the trouble the US has caused down there to jump up and yell "Commie" too quickly when a charismatic, populist leader appears ... even if he says things that make Republicans start feeling queasy.)

Not wanting to beat the dead horse any longer, but it seems an unequal chastising when my "lighten up" comment gets called on the carpet, when it was in direct response to Mr. Nimbus' comment to me that was -

"Believe it or not Mr. C, but not everyone in the world is just like you!

Maybe we just "see" things differently.
