Somehow, this reminds me of the good old days when we'd get a write-up somewhere, and without fail, people would come in, ask to see the beer list, talk about how great it was that we established a Lite Free Zone -- knee slapping, yuk yuk -- and then, with a straight face, order a Miller Lite.

They thought the whole thing was a joke. It wasn't, but so it goes, I guess.

Much of the charm of Sergio's derives from a sense of eccentricity, bordering on anarchy, but dished out with considerable passion. Mainsteamers are unlikely to get the point, anyway, so they might as well cull the herd from the outset, because it will be the kind of place that inspires devotion from the regulars, which suits me, because now Sergio's is close enough for me to ride my bicycle.

Over ... maybe not back.

Look, it was a simple question about whether or not I'd be screwed if I walked in with a $20 bill. Intuitively I felt one way, but the website seemed to present a different story.

Sound and fury signifying nothing, I do believe.

Let's all just carry on...in a different topic.

John and Roger,
You both have said it well about Sergio's.

I think we can all celebrate and support yet another visionary local owner who puts money, heart and sweat into opening a unique establishment in the Metro Louisville area. (Especially in this economy.)

I spent some time at Sergio's on Saturday night with the owner and found good humor and answers about beers that were new to me.
The remolded bar area looked pretty good with a large reach-in refrigerator full of bottles and Bell's HopSlam and some other beers already on tap. The selection will only get better as work is completed.

(I have no financial or family interest in Sergio's.
Just glad to see another local and different place open and also encourage support.)

The first thing that popped into my head when I read the no-change policy was that he must be catering to the stripper and bartender crowd! :D

Come on man, read the web site. Opens at four.

actually john, i couldn't tell you whether the offerings at applebee's are succulent or not. i don't eat there. i was only using their name to make a generic reference to a hypothetical newpaper ad. perhaps this was my own attempt at humor which resulted in some not "getting it." oh, the irony. a hypothetical ad in which, yes, i imagined applebee's would describe their food as tasty, succulent, or some other synonym for the word appetizing. i can't say whether or not they would be correct in doing so. i can only make the generalization that in any ad, (fill-in-the-blank with any restaurant name that suits you) would make this same claim. i was not in any way trying to slam sergio's, their owners, their management, or their kid, personally. i'm sure they are all very pleasant folks. i started participating in this forum for the sake of reading the opinions of others and having an oppurtunity to state my own. it is my opinion that it was irresponsible for sergio's not to be sure their website was up to par before launching it. i'm sure someone read over the beer lists and what not to be sure that they included the correct pricing or that they hadn't left anything out. he probably had some idea of what his paint color was going to look like before he opened the can and slapped it on the barroom walls. i'm just saying i felt that his poor website was poor PR and that i feel it was a careless mistake. period. i'm sure they have a delightful place with lots of delicious beer to drink. i wish them luck in their business venture.

The same could be said of Richo's and I LOVE the place. The lite free zone, the food, everything about the place is awesome. The difference is that your website is very informative, accurate, and people know what to expect and feel welcome. You don't speak to your customers like children and I have always been treated with respect. Even when I was a craft brew virgin and had 50 questions for your workers, I never felt unwelcome.

Humor is fine when people know its humor. The supposed "jokes" come across as the truth to outsiders and it seems he will struggle to bring in "new" customers with the info he has on his website. I guess I'll make to trip across the river to Richo's for a few more weeks until I feel truly welcome at Sergio's.

It's a simple situation of being aware of the rhetorical situation. Based on audience feedback here, the website is not accomplishing the goals expected of a website. It's missing the rhetorical context, and, in turn, not accomplishing the work it wants to accomplish - unless that work is misleading potential customers.

I think those people defending Sergio's are missing the point and/or have their blinders on. People (starting with me) seem to be taking issue with the website not Sergio or the new establishment. Having said that, I can't really blame anyone who is turned off by the website, although I would hope that they'd take the risk and visit Sergio's. I've been to the old place and am a fan of the concept and Sergio himself. As John has established, it seems to be an error on the website. Water under the bridge.

Sergios website has been a mess for at least two years now. I doubt anything will change any time soon.

They are actually open? I stopped in yesterday evening to talk with my favorite Draft Tech. He was still putting the draft system together. No kegs were visible in the new walk-in cooler and every horizontal surface from the front door to the back were covered with full beer bottles. It appears they are days from opening, your mileage may vary.

He should just shut down the website. I think a website is often a persons first experience with a business and it should be accurate and inviting or not online.

The extent to which people are defending Segios makes me want to stop by even more than I did before the website debacle.

I understand people being passionate about something, but there crosses a line where they become fanatical.

Perhaps, I've been watching too much Meet the Press. Or, not enough SpongeBob Squarepants.

I don't think the comments were people having their "knickers in a twist"- just constructive criticism, with people trying to give input on how it was perceived and what could/would turn them off. As a former owner, this kind of input is invaluable; sometimes you don't notice/understand how things are being interpretted until someone points it out.
