That's a shame Annemarie, growing up in Queens my mother made chicken and dumplings all the time.

Mom worked full time. The woman traveled on the buses and subways to get to and from work, and needed a quick way to get meals on the table! Our pressure cooker was always in use. Mom made really goods soups, beef stew, and cornbread, and the all time favorite CHICKEN AND DUMPLINGS made with bisquick!

see, its kinda funny that you, that are not from here, knew nothing about chicken and dumplins'. Whether Pro or Am, anyone should come out and play. It's a down home dish and if a chef got beat by a home "Am" cook they shouldnt' be mad.
Everyone cooks at home to some extent right? Hell, my wife makes mean stuffed shells, i shocked her by eating left overs, they were that good! My philosophy.... never complain at someones house cause you'll never be invited back!" Where ever the event is, it's a house, dont complain! So I'm putting the challenge out to all of you home cooks to come out and have fun. How much fun for you would it be to beat a chef? Ya can't hurt my pride, It's just my career! Maybe there should be a diverted challenge that a chef attempts to do someone elses job? Ponder that one to all that dont get paid for cooking! The chefs work so many hours we are just tryin to give back to the community in anyway we can. Keep the ideas coming, cooking is all i know, wouldnt mind trying to do something else and raise money!

I completely agree with Chef Howie on this and would like to take it a step further. I believe a home cook will win this one (85% sure) with a family recipe passed down through generations. I immediately think of Bobby Flay's show where, with a couple exceptions, he consistently gets worked over by home cooks passionate about thier chosen dishes.

I can't wait for this one and, schedule willing, I hope to attend. I've never tried to duplicate my mother's recipe, but think I might give it the go!

May 19, 2009 - Tuesday evening, 6:00 to 9:00 PM
Standard Country Club, 8208 Brownsboro Road.

The clubhouse is closed, so we can have full use of the ballroom. We can provide tables and chairs for seating, 8-foot tables for cook stations (with power), and use of the kitchen for final prep and reheating, if needed.

We'd like to be able to run a cash bar for the event so that the club can recoup some of the cost of linens, labor, etc. All other proceeds collected by the LHB group are for the charity of choice, obviously.

If this sounds good, let's move forward. I can confirm the date on Tuesday when our F&B director returns from vacation, but I am in, the GM is in, and the staff is in.

Bret,
I would be happy to help you out with the linen. We would have to make arrangements for our stuff not to be mixed with Bundles product, but I am sure between you, Nick and Rick - You can come up with a plan. Talk it over with Rick and let me know if this is something you want to do.

Robin,
I'll help with one of those little details...ie...coordinating a people's choice ballot and counting votes. Or perhaps I may be able to twist some arms for celebrity judges....psuedo celebrity judges.
Sounds like fun,

Sounds like fun,

Beth, the detail work, that's great! We can use that kind of help. Celebrity judges, frankly, not so much ... we really like to use our own people and have judges who know food and cookery.

Robin,
Just read this thread and it sounds great! I am getting a tad confused, hopefully, I am not the only one...LOL.
Can you please clarify where everything stands at the moment? Are the competitors pros only or pro-am? Are the judges pro only or pro-am? What are the specific divisions? Aside from the offer of the space, what else has been finalized?
If it is pro-am, how much should one expect to make (5 gal?) What else would one be expected to provide?
Thanks!

Let me kick that one around a little, Carolyne. I think it IS time to set things a little more specifically.

I have no idea in what way I may help, but if you can see a way to use me, I am more than willing to assist in any way as long as it occurs before May 23.

Robin - I will volunteer to help tabulate the People's Choice awards, walk around and clean up, whatever is needed. Just let me know!
