As a former die-hard New Yorker, I'm going to have to do some complaining about the bashing of both Sabrett hot dogs and ketchup.

This whole "no ketchup" thing is silliness. You put what you want on your Hot dogs...it's simple, really. If you want ketchup and spicy brown mustard (my choices) then that's what you use. If I should happen to go to a place that wouldnt let me put ketchup on my dogs, I'd probably throw the dogs back at them and never come back. Once I pay for the dogs, I put what I want on them. Where did this "no ketchup" nonsense come from anyway?

I happen to like dirt water dogs...I consider them representative of New York, just like Pizza!!!

This whole N.Y. style vs. Chicago style of Hot dogs just comes down to what you grew up eating. I grew up eating Sabrett, Nathans and Boars Head dogs...so that's my preference.

Now, leave my darned Hot Dogs and Ketchup alone!! :D

On your first point I dont think anybody was doing any bashing. The OP was asking about how authentic(to Chicago) the dogs were, hence the discussion about Vienna and ketchup.
On the second point,I couldnt agree with you more.Well put. :)
The tall one wants white toast, dry, with nothin' on it.
And the short one wants four whole fried chickens, and a Coke.

Yikes- I just looked and my head is flattened from all this bashing...

That's okay, I'm happy with my flat head, as long as John still thinks I'm cool.

I like Lonnie's, just had lunch there last week, but one thing bothers me... the use of sliced cucumber as opposed to a pickle spear. I grew up in the north suburbs and can only remember a pickle spear on a dog, never cucumber. Is it just me? Could it be regional? I wanted to ask Lonnie about it but he was quite busy at the time.

To add to the New York crowd, I love the street vendors hot dogs in NY. Sabretts hot dogs are great. I often buy Nathan's hot dogs at Kroger and will be Hebrew National as well. I think, however, Thumann's were my favorite growing up.
