Puccini - pizza is ok. Garlic bread is very good.

Boombozz - really good pizza if eaten in the restaurant. Love the Nonna with anchovies substituted for the saugage. I don't think the pizzas travel very well, though, for carry out or delivery.

Hero - tried yesterday for first time at lunch. Good slices and staff is trying hard. I'll be back to try more stuff, and soon!

delivery charge.

by Doogy R » Sat Jan 26, 2008 11:54 pm

I have never ordered a pizza that HAD a delivery charge. I must live in the Twilight Zone. And I normally give the delivery dude at least a fiver.

This is Mama Bearno's special.

I was just having the delivery charge discussion with a friend of mine the other night. There was discussion about whether or not to tip when a delivery charge is added. From what I understand MOST places have a delivery charge these days and it's just given to you unoted in your total.

Personally I RARELY get delivery anymore due to the selection of delivery options in my area and because I'll go out of my way to pick up good pizza and bring it back home. However on the rare occasions I get delivery it usually comes a LONG way and I tip accordingly.

I always tip too, but check your receipt next time. There is almost always a delivery charge.

I forgot to add that we went to Hero's a few weeks ago, and were totally impressed. The pizza was excellent, just absolutely top notch! We had tried going to Rich O's, but the place was packed (a good sign) and after driving 30 minutes to get there, my hubby decided he didn't feel like waiting, so we left. Hopefully, we'll get an opportunity to try Rich-O's soon.

Rich-O's business has gone through the roof. I think they need a second location.

Sorry for not catching this thread 'til now; I've been under the weather.

We're the first to concede that last year's big spike caught us entirely off guard. It's a good problem to have, but a problem nonetheless.

There has been a longtime conundrum with respect to seating, and the easiest way to explain it is that we’ve continued to add seating capacity with the same size kitchen, which was designed for about a third of the people who now are prepared to order food at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.

Obviously, the kitchen must eventually be expanded, but to do that means we lose seats somewhere, probably on the Rich O’s side.

Currently we’re working on a plan to change the way we use Prost, which is the party room/banquet area located by the pub. As it turns out, Prost really hasn’t been big enough to do regular functions like receptions, and our catering options have been both difficult to prepare and generally supplanted by a preference for pizza. Consequently, Prost sits empty when we need to use it.

For the short term, and while retaining the option of using Prost as an events area for art shows, FOSSILS meetings and preferred seating during beer festivals, our plan is to use Prost as a non-smoking dining area.

This is not a perfect solution; the kitchen still isn't any larger, but at least we can get people seated, and beers & appetizers served. There'll be a flat-screen television so that sporting events become an option on that side of the building. It also doesn't help with parking. There remains plenty of parking in the neighborhood, just not in front of the building.

We're working on it. Hopefully this will give us time to figure out a plan for kitchen expansion, which hasn’t yet been done.

And, we're still pursuing the brewery expansion plan in downtown New Albany; however, no pizza planned for there.

There was a discussion about this several months ago. We were really surprised to get our pizza, only to discover that they had just snuck in a delivery charge without actually telling us that there was such a charge, which kind of annoyed me.

Don't get me wrong, I don't mind paying the charge, I just thought it was kind of done in a sneaky way. If they had been upfront and said, "Oh by the way, there is a $1.50 delivery charge," it would have been different.
I specifically remember having ordered from this place (a large chain) just a month or so earlier, and there was no delivery charge.

We usually tip well regardless, but I was a bit miffed that they were so sneaky about it.

That's good to know. Most places that distribute coupons include offers only redeemable for carry out. I consider this an alternative. Good for your drivers. I've delivered a pizza or two in my past employment and can declare that "everyone does not tip for delivery." Gas and maintenance need the coverage.

My favorites are Hero's (The greek pizza is awesome) and Boombozz although I do not care for their pizza with the white garlic sauce on it. We have been to Puccini's twice. We really liked it the first time we went and we were impressed with the more "gourmet" pizza options. We ordered whole pizzas. We went for lunch a couple of days ago and got the daily special pizza (which is by the slice) and were not as impressed.

What I really miss is a good pizzeria where you can get pizza by the slice! We used to live in VA and there was the best pizza place there that had huge gourmet pizza options by the slice. IF I were a business person, that is the restaurant I would open.

Luigi's and Hero's and Oak Street Pizza. She did say "gourmet" pizza, though. That makes me think of something a little more offbeat than NYC-style.

Gourmet pizza? If that's not NYC/Neapolitan style then I am at a loss.

Favorite pizza? Mine is Primo's.

by Doogy R » Tue Feb 05, 2008 9:15 pm

My fave is the Venezia at Primo. The smoked shrimp along with that smokey charred crust from the wood burning oven is quite addictive. The pizza also come with fresh spinach, parmesan and garlic butter. Yummo.

The Venezia is my favorite, too. Primo is my family's number one choice for pizza since we can all get what we want on our own pie and we love the cracker-like crust. It reminds us of our favorite pizza place on South Beach. Our second choice is the pizza at Cafe Lou Lou. Their crust is the best of the traditional style crusts in our opinion.
When in doubt, add more wine.
