It's nice to see the two best pizzas in town getting the majority of the votes! They both have mine.

However, as the lone vote for what I consider " The White Castle of Pizza" and an Indiana Tradition since 1958....I can't get too hung up on any other pie because PIZZA KING RULES! :D

I'll probably catch some flack for this but Papa Murphy's gets my vote. Everything is super fresh; most ingredients are either made fresh in the store or prepped on site. Dough is made in-house. Cheese is grated right there. Veggies are chopped on-site.

I'm crazy about their super thin Delites crust. They are happy to handle special requests. "No cheese on my half and I get all the veggies." Unique toppings like artichokes and fresh spinach. Mexican pizza. Thai pizza. Two different red sauces and a great white garlic sauce. My favorite: Chicken, bacon, artichoke and spinach on the thin crust. Yummy.

Yes, you have to bake it yourself but their new baking pans result in a super crisp thin crust that I really enjoy. They also have a great stuffed pizza and their brand new pan pizza. I don't get those because of the carbs but they look delicious.

I generally enjoy the good pizza joints that feature a nice rotating selection of microbrews. e.g. BoomBozz, Lou Lou. The two go hand in hand in my book. Robin mentioned it in his initial post, but for anyone who didn't realize... you can vote for up to 5.

I found the discussion over what constitutes a pizzeria to be interesting/entertaining.

So can someone tell me the difference and/or connection between the Original Impellizzeri's and Tony Impellizzeri's ? The pictures of "Tony's" pies that I have seen online in reviews and such -look- incredible but trail the "Original" in this (informal) poll by a wide margin...what gives ?

I'm sure somebody will come along with more detail but the 2 different restaurants are owned by brothers I believe. The father started to the pizza place and one ended up getting the original place and the other one went off on his own. I've had pizza at both places it can tell you that the original is much better. Tony's used to be down here off of Shelbyville Road near Hurstbourne Parkway but that location closed several years ago, I'm not sure where they are located now but I haven't bothered looking either.

Mark hit the nail on the head. Brothers who split after their father died and the original place closed.

Pleasure Ridge Pizza and Sports Bar on Crittenden deserves a shout out. I had a City Saver coupon and decided to try their pizza. We had the veggie and meat lovers. They were done well with thin crust and thick topping. In fact, they were darn good! Even the side parmesan tasted fresh.

I'm surprised this place has been overlooked.

Tony Impellizerri receives this Hoosier's vote!!!! Sure they only offer carry-out. But Tony bakes the pies himself and checks to make sure they are not under cooked and meet his expectations before plating them or boxing them for his customers.

We even will order on a Friday afternoon- tell Tony to "cook to safe" and he will bake it to the perfect finish for us to pop in the oven when our guests finally arrive and we decide it's time to eat!

Even for 2 adults we order the extra large and have a minimum of 8 pieces left over to make some envy worthy lunches at work.

We have tried many others but Tony's always is our first choice and have converted many family and friends.

If you KY residents feel like firing up the space shuttle to travel to the sunny-side you will get a mighty fine pie for your efforts.

After my question about Impellizerri's I had a nice note from Tony inviting me to come over and give it a try. Not much I'll cross the river for but good pizza IS one of them. We're looking forward to trying this pie soon, as I said...judging from the pictures I've seen it looks AWESOME.

I know Louisville has a lot of pizzerias, but I feel that it is lacking one that does the NY "Famous Rays" style street pizza. We loved Frascelli's, but it's become quite a hike from J-Town. Perfetto was our fave by far. When Dan told me he was selling the place, but that everything would remain the same, I was pretty skeptical. Turns out I was right, after the last two visits there we will not be returning - uneven dough (cracker thin on one side, huge air bubbles on the other), flavorless sauce, cheap toppings. We've been fairly happy with Papalino's in Springhurst (don't get me started on their Highlands location). We also enjoy Johnny V's, though most times it's a little too chees-y for me.

Does anyone have any good recommendations where to go for the style of pizza I love so much?

Hi, Joshua, and welcome to the forum! Glad you found your way in the front door.

I'm sorry to hear that about Perfetto's. I didn't get out that way too often, but it did bring back my memories of Famous Ray's and other NYC street-corner pizza from our years there in the '90s.

I don't know that you'll find an exact match, but the Old School NY Pizza that I reviewed recently comes pretty close, with the friendly Brooklynites behind the counter a definite plus.
Here's my review: http://www.louisvillehotbytes.com/red-c ... l-ny-pizza

Luigi's, downtown on West Main just past 21C and Proof, is, or was, a classic NY style, large and foldable.

And, although it's not quite the same, the pizzas at Caffe Classico,, corner of Frankfort and Clifton, make me very happy, more from memories of Italy than NYC, but the NY pie does have its roots in Naples. (Caffe Classico's recipe, oddly, comes from Naples by way of Bosnia, but you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference. )

Thanks for the suggestions! I will have to give Cafe Classico a try.

We've been to Old School twice, LOVE their gelatos (much better than Gilberto IMO). Their pizza is pretty good, but my wife isn't a big fan of their pepperoni. We're a pizza every Friday night kind of family - it's always a good start to a weekend when you have some great pizza - just haven't been able to find our "go to" spot since Perfetto shut down.
